Help for Orange Dude

Orange Dude found us back in the summer. He came to our house so skinny, practically starving to death. He was already fixed and after searching the internet for lost cat posts, we figured he must have just been dumped him in our neigborhood. So we started feeding him...

He is the MOST friendly and sweet cat we have ever met. He just wanted to be around us and loved sitting on our front step. Orange has such a good personality and just wants to love everyone and everything.

We got him to a healthy weight and he was living the dream, hanging out very close to our house and our friendly neighbors yards. He never went too far away.

The Monday evening after Thanksgiving he was curled up next to our front door not moving. He wouldn't respond to us opening the door, calling him or putting out his food. We tried to pick him up and he limped away to hide in the back yard. Matt was sure something was very very wrong. He decided to take Orange Dude to the Pet ER because it looked like he might have somehow broken his leg. At the ER, Matt found out he had a high powered air rifle pellet in his leg. It broke the bone! Our options were to put him down, amputate, or have a rod and pins put in his leg.

As you animal lovers out there will understand, we could not put him down. Amputation was the next cheapeast option but Matt refused - he didn't want one persons cruel decision to shoot this innocent cat to keep him from living the rest of his life (we found out he is only about 6 months old, and has a lot of life left to live). So we went for the very expensive option, $6,000 - surgery to remove the pellet and insert a rod with several pins so he could hopefully walk and play like his old self again.

After two nights in the ER and a lot of pacing and nail biting, Orange Dude came out of surgery in good shape and we were able to bring him home for 12 weeks of recovery.

He is still so sweet and just wants to be around us and the other cats. His personality has not changed, even though he has had a very hard life so far.

Nobody should have to be in a position to make a decision about a life while worrying about money as a factor. A life is a life, and we felt it was the only option for us and for this incredible dude. We tapped into savings for this unexpected surgery, and with a baby on the way in April, we are definitely a little more stressed than we would have been. Anything would help, even the smallest donations. We may not be able to recover all the money, but it was well spent on a life that was worth saving. I hope you all think so too. Orange Dude will be spending his recovery with us and then moving to a new, loving home. Hopefully all of the bad stuff is over and he can have a relaxing little life for years to come.

Thank you friends, family and strangers. Happy Holidays!
