Help for Chris Davis - Hit by a car

$445 of $1,000 goal

Raised by 9 people in 12 days
On Wednesday, Chris and his little brother Kayden were both hit by a pickup while walking to school along West Mary Street in Ottumwa, Iowa, just a block from their home, in an area that did not have sidewalks.  Kayden had only minor injuries, bruises and scrapes.  Chris wasn't as lucky.  He was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City with a laceration to his spleen, broken pelvis and lots of scrapes and bruises. He was in and out of consciousness for several hours after the accident. Doctors say he will be here for at least a week, possibly longer.  We are raising funds to help pay for medical expenses, recovery expenses as well as family expenses such as hotels and food during his stay in Iowa City.  I'm Chris's uncle, Nick Davis. Money raised will be given to my mother, Chris's grandmother and legal guardian, Sheryl Steele. Every little bit helps. We do not know what his insurance (Medicaid) will pay for. The driver of the truck did not have vehicle insurance. I've set the goal at $5,000 simply because I do not know what our final expenses will be. Please give whatever you can.

First off, sorry for no update yesterday, I was driving back home to Texas and wasnt able to post anything.

Chris has been taken off the morphine but he is still hurting, which is to be expected.

He has also been moved from ICU to a regular room, still in the Stead family Childrens Hospital.

He has been up and walking multiple times on Friday and Saturday, sounds like these were mostly against his will. He still just wants to lay in bed and sleep, can't say I blame him.

As for his spleen, doctors are happy with his heart rate and hemoglobin levels and have decided that surgery will not be necessary.

Thank you everyone for the wishes, prayers and donations. It does sound like Chris's Medicaid will cover the medical costs, but anyone who has ever been in the hospital for a week, or had a loved one in the hospital for a long stay knows there are plenty of other costs that are not covered by insurance. These donations will go a long way for helping cover those.

We also wanted to thank the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. A room opened up Thursday night and my parents have been staying there overnight.

Doctors say Chris will likely be sent home sometime in the middle of next week.

Future updates will likely be posted to my moms Facebook page. If you don't have her as a friend, you can search "Sheryl Steele".

Thank you everyone for your kind wishes, prayers and donations.

We have some news on Chris. He is currently heavily medicated and sedated. He spent the majority of the day asleep in his hospital bed. Doctors are going to try to wean him off the morphine soon.

He was asking about his little brother, Kayden, who also came to visit him today.

Doctors are still monitoring progress on his spleen. They're waiting a day or two to monitor that and will reevaluate surgical options at that time.

His pelvis is just going to take time to heal. There is not much the doctors can do for it except allow it to heal.

The Physical Therapist want to try to get Chris out of bed and moving around tomorrow. A lot of this is going to depend on how much pain he is in.

Chris did develop some rashes and slight swelling today. We believe these are from him landing in poison ivy along the road and creek where the accident happened. Doctors are treating that with calamine lotion and benadryl.

All and all, Chris is doing better than yesterday, but he still has a long road ahead of him.

Chris's 13th birthday is on Sunday and we're working with some great people at the University of Iowa Stead Family Childrens Hospital to make sure he has an awesome birthday. Depending on his progress, he may even be able to go upstairs to watch the football game on Saturday.

We'll try to keep you updated, here on Go Fund Me, with any developments.
