Eric Bates is a 56 year old father of Cecily, age 7 and stepfather of Michael, age 18 still in the home. Eric had a stroke three years ago and a quadruple heart bypass in 2011. The grafts began failing within the first year. Eric now has another 100% blocked artery, 2- 70% blocked arteries and 1 that has a stent. The family has one income, as Eric is on disability and Delaina has a new job without any paid time off. Medicare requires 20% payment, and these procedures are expensive. We are looking at ways to get Eric to a cadiothorasic surgeon in Plano, Texas that specializes in secondary bypass surgeries if needed. All funds would be spent on medical bills, medical travel expenses and medications. Thank you for your help!

Break down of Eric’s heart stuff (WARNING BAD LANGUAGE):
1. The stent Dr. Chandwany has recommended has been attempted before (2016)and it failed. There is new technology that makes this more likely to succeed, but we may have to fight the insurance company to get it approved.
2. Dr. Chandwany had no idea this had been attempted before “because I don’t have those records”. This is bullshit. He has the records, he just did not review them. Three times the records have been sent. We have literally seen the records on the computers at this practice.
3. I asked when he wanted to do the next procedure. He stated “within the next 2-3 weeks, but we must have an office consult before the procedure. “
4. My response: After his heart attack in March, it took two months to get an appointment with you, and it was rescheduled by your staff TWICE. So how can the procedure be done this quickly if we can’t even get an appointment? We’ve been to Dallas and back since then and had two consults in the time it took to even get into your office.
5. We are going to call Dr. Park and Pool in Plano/Dallas and get a consult before proceeding with this procedure.

Dr. Chandwany is very thorough with his explanations and has an excellent bedside manner. He was not in any way irritated by my questions and believes (80%) he can fix Eric. He also stated that the surgery is risky and could prove fatal. He is willing to work with the doctors in Plano as well. His explanations about the reasons behind the contraindication for secondary bypass have been the best we have had in the six years we have been dealing with this.
Eric must have an intervention or he will die. He is 100% blocked on the vessel that goes to the back left side of his heart. That
side of his heart is not dead. There is blood flow from a capillary keeping it alive. Eric has some bypass grafts that are still functioning beautifully, and where he has issues, his body has made collateral vessels.
This is the part I do not understand:
ERIC IS A WALKING MIRACLE. HE HAS SO MANY POSITIVES THAT ABSOLUTELY DEFY EXPLANATION.
The reason he has not had interventions is because of the lack of specialists and the stranglehold insurance companies have over our lives. This is DISGUSTING, IMMORAL and SHAMEFUL.
Eric is alive right now by the grace of God, his determination to live, and the fact that he remained an active athlete his entire life and worked his ass off literally all over the world for the oil and gas industry that likely contributed to his heart issues due to chemicals he was exposed to overseas.
This is going to be expensive no matter where we have the procedure done. Thank you to everyone for the donations, prayers, thoughts and kind words. We still have quite a bit to get to our goal to cover the expenses we need help with.

Today three years ago Eric was working in North Dakota and started having chest pains on a job site. Eric collapsed but thankfully he was not on the job site alone. A young man named Michael (ironic) kept him from falling on a cattle guard and gave directions to an ambulance that had to drive 14 miles on dirt roads to get to him. I flew to North Dakota the next day. It was discovered that at Eric had suffered a stroke. The hospital in North Dakota didn’t even have a cardiologist. I followed the ambulance 100 miles to Bismarck. Soon after we arrived home, Eric collapsed again while we were getting the kids ready for school. Michael (my son) saw something was wrong and kept him from falling onto the stove. Eric has not worked since. He had open heart surgery in 2011 and was working again within a month. His first bypass failed in 2012. He still went back to work. But after the events in 2015, Eric never worked again. We fought with disability for 2 1/2 years. Eric has fought to stay alive for a long time now. He’s tired physically, emotionally and mentally. The financial costs to our family have been devastating. We appreciate so much the help we have received thus far. We are praying the doctors can find a solution, but it comes at a high cost. Thank you all for the prayers, kind words and thoughts.
