On Christmas Eve 2018, Elroy Pankratz had a major stroke while visiting his family in Oregon. He was transported via ambulance to St  Anthony's hospital in Pendleton, Oregon. There it was determined the severity of his case required a neurological surgeon, which in turn necessitated a 200-mile emergency flight to Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Upon arrival, he immediately underwent surgery in the early hours of Christmas morning to remove a blood clot in his brain.

As a Canadian citizen, Elroy is ordinarily covered by his nation's health insurance. Unfortunately, that likely will not cover any expenses out of the country. Regardless, between an ambulance ride, emergency flight, care at two hospitals, and emergency surgery Christmas morning, the costs are going to be tremendous.

Elroy and Nancy have given their lives to helping others and have touched many lives in amazing and powerful ways. For example, Elroy and Nancy were once missionaries to remote first nations in BC Canada, have made numerous foreign aid and missions trips all over the world, and have relentlessly cared for family members in need. We're estimating more than $100,000 US (~$140k Canadian) in medical expenses and it could be much more. We're asking those whose lives Elroy has touched to help us reach a goal for a portion of the costs. Please consider giving to help Elroy and Nancy pay for this expense. Please pray for our family during this difficult time.

Love,
Elroy's Family

Elroy continues to slowly improve. He is gaining conscious movement in his left leg - he can move it a little and wiggle his toes! So far he has no feeling or movement in his left arm and hand. Swallowing is getting stronger. He was able to eat a 2/3 of a container of thickened apple juice yesterday! We are eager for the transition from a feeding tube to eating by mouth. Prior to Elroy's stroke, he had a personal trainer at the Penticton Fitness Club (pretty amazing for an 82-year-old man). We've told him that the physical therapist at the hospital is now his personal trainer. He's been working hard on his exercises! Please pray that a bed will open up for him in the rehabilitation unit at the Penticton hospital. Hopefully a move there will be the next step in his recovery. Thank you again for your prayers and support.

Today's update on Elroy: He is mostly sleeping as his body slowly heals following the stroke. Quite a few bright spots: his left hand has healed from the infection; he looks like himself again - eyes wide open and no droop on the left side of his mouth; some reflexive action appearing in his left leg and left arm; turning his head farther to the left; swallowing quite well; sitting up in a chair. These are all important steps on his road to recovery. Thank you for your many prayers and your financial support!

Update from Myrna Van Cleave, 12/31:

Elroy showed some improvement today! He turned his head slightly to the left, looking that direction for the first time. His left eye is more open than it has been, and he was able to look across the room. Also, he appears to have some movement in his left leg. Elroy slept a lot today. This is important, because as he sleeps his body is able to heal. Thank you again for your prayers and financial support!

Here's the latest update: Elroy is showing slight improvement. He is beginning to swallow, but until that becomes easier he is being fed through a feeding tube. Because speech is difficult, the family has to work hard to understand him. At this point in time, he has no feeling on his left side. Elroy's sleep apnea causes him to often fall asleep when he stops breathing and then wake up when he starts breathing again. He had a longer stretch of alertness today, and his indomitable spirit came through. He wanted to do his exercises! Being unable to do the pushups he desired to do, he held his right arm high in the air for long periods of time. He wanted family members to push against the palm of his hand, and he even did some arm wrestling. He has a possible skin infection in his left hand, probably from an earlier IV. The doctor has ordered an antibiotic for this. Family members are taking turns staying with Elroy around the clock. We very much appreciate your prayers for our beloved husband, dad, Grandpa and friend. He is our hero.
