Camberwell After School Project (CASP) provides support for local parents and carers in Southwark and Lambeth who wish to study and/or work by providing good, quality and affordable Out of School childcare provision. Our objective is to provide safe, satisfying group play and supplementary learning experiences to advance the development of children aged 2 to 11 years. This appeal will enable us to continue providing affordable child care for one year for over 100 children from families most at risk of poverty through the combined factors of high living cost, childcare, low pay and government benefit cuts.
Southwark was ranked 12th in the UK for having the highest proportion of children living in poverty. About 37% of children live in homes with an income of below £15,000, 7% more than the UK average. As childcare costs account for a significant part of a family's budget, rising childcare costs and recent welfare cuts are pushing children from low-income families further into poverty.
Changes to benefits for parents on low-income, coupled with rising living costs and family spending is having a knock-on effect on our aim to be both affordable and sustainable. It is important that we keep our childcare fees affordable and within reach of low income families budget. However, we have a shortfall in our budget and urgently need your help to raise a total funds of £30,000 by 31st March 2019. Your support is much-needed to enable us to continue to provide a happy, secure and safe environment where children can grow and thrive whilst out of school. Through your kind donations we will be able to maintain our services for further year. This will contribute towards rent and overhead cost (£8,554.00) and 665 quality hours of care (3 part time play workers salary £21,446.00) for 190 school days per year.
Child poverty blights childhoods, diminishes a child's future prospects and imposes costs on the wider community. Your support will ensure low-income working or student parents/carers have a safe haven out of school for their children to attend. Instead of them using alternatively or unregistered child carers. At CASP children have a fun filled enjoyable time, make new friends, socialise, be creative, learn new skills by having new experiences, explore and investigate both the outside and indoor environments. Giving parents/carers the support they need to gain, remain and sustain employment or further study, therefore, helping them to foster an economically better quality of life and future for their children and themselves.
