With the encouragement and support of my friends and family, I have made the frightening and exhilarating choice to start a new phase in my life. I have stopped serving tables and taken my poetry career into my hands. In September of this year I will start my courses in my MA of Creative Writing at the University College of Cork in Cork, Ireland. It has always been a dream to live in Ireland, and after 30 years, I am finally making this a reality.
Anyone who knows me understands how hard it is for me to ask for financial support. I am a very self-sufficient person who has always taken care of himself. I have created this Go-Fund-Me because many of you have expressed interest in supporting me on my new adventure as I push headlong into my next phase of life. The money raised from this Go-Fund-Me will cover the remaining costs of my college fees, as well as put money towards my first and last month’s rent at my new apartment in Ireland.
This college degree will cost roughly $15,000. I have been blessed enough to receive a $7,500 scholarship from the college but am still in charge of covering the remaining half. Additionally, my apartment in Galway will cost roughly $1200. Once I have secured a job, I will be able to support myself for the duration of my stay in Ireland. However, in order to begin this journey, I need a kick start.
With a graduate degree, I will have more opportunities as a poet, performer, and educator. In addition to writing and touring my poetry across the United States and Europe, I will also be qualified to deliver poetry workshops at higher-paying institutions, thus allowing me to support myself and my family financially solely on my work as a poet. I am eager to reach this next step of my career and be able to build the structure for what I was meant to do.
