Help Autumn Study Abroad in Ghana

Donation protected
Hello all,
As you may know I am currently a second-year doctoral student at the University of Maryland - College Park (UMD), studying Teaching, Learning, Policy, & Leadership. During my time at the UMD, I have served as the secretary for the Black Graduate Student Union and a member of the Graduate Student Association in the College of Education. I am a McNair Fellow and have received the Dean's Fellowship for academic excellence. I have served as a research assistant on various projects, a teacher's assisstant for two courses, have worked to present and submit for publication my own research on the educational experiences of Black students in secondary schools, and am a co-founder of the blog Blackademia.

Most recently, I was accepted into a program to study abroad in Ghana for January 2018!

The Higher Education in Ghana program will focus on the role of student affairs and assessment practices in the context of Ghanaian higher education. The program will expand beyond Western ideals of social justice education, particularly considering the sociohistorical relationship between the U.S. and West Africa, and engage in critical examination of concepts related to power, privilege, and oppression.

Throughout this experience I will engage in readings, reflections and discussions prior to, during and following the study aboard experience. In addition, I will work as a collaborator with student services professionals from campus partners at the University of Cape Coast on the development of necessary resources and tools for campus partners. During the study aboard experience in the country of Ghana, I will engage in cultural experiences, gain historical knowledge, visit with educators, policymakers, and administrators at varying levels of the educational pipeline (p-12), visit various institutions of higher education in Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, and Elmina, engage with student services professionals affiliated with the institutions we'll visit, interact with higher education/student services graduate students, and develop, co-produce, and present materials during a symposium on the campus of the University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana.

As a participant in the program, I will strengthen my assessment, evaluation, and program improvement skills and acknowledge, while centering the educational mission and cultural influences of Ghanaian higher education. Additionally, the program provides an opportunity for me to expand my framework of practice in an international context, supporting my development as a social justice educator. I plan to emerge from the program having gained increased skills and acknowledge as it pertains to assessment, evaluation, and program improvement practices and a more informed understanding of global citizenry through social justice education.
