Help Alicia Escape Her Abuser

$2,000 of $6,000 goal

This is my best friend Alicia. She is loyal, loving, intelligent, hardworking, hilarious, strong, talented, and a wonderful mother to her four year old autistic son, Bob.

She is also trapped in an abusive living situation.

Alicia is still living with her abuser, her ex. Although they are legally separated, Alicia has remained in the former family home while gathering the financial resources to support herself and Bob. During the course of their separation, the abuser has physically, sexually, and emotionally assaulted Alicia. She has also displayed violent outbursts of temper in front of Bob on many occasions. Despite these behaviors, the abuser has done everything in her power to convince Alicia that *she* is controlling, abusive, manipulative, and a danger to their son.

Although Alicia handles the bulk of her son's care when he is not at pre-school (while also working outside the home), her abuser constantly claims that Alicia is a neglectful parent. On one occasion, this included a call to the police out of "concern" for their son's well-being while he was in Alicia's care.

All Alicia wants is to be free of her abuser while preserving the educational and health services she has obtained for her son. This has been difficult, as she has no reliable childcare options besides herself. It has taken her nearly a year to find a safe way out. Now she has finally fond a potential new home, and she's very excited for this new start for her and Bob.

There's only one problem. Her ex has withdrawn her promise to pay for childcare for Bob. Without it, Alicia cannot work and cannot afford to leave. Faced with the prospect of a legal battle, Alicia has filed a Protection From Abuse order. I am terrified of what will happen when the abuser finds out she has taken legal action. Alicia is, too. Above all, she wants to protect her son.

You can help.

Please consider donating to assist with the legal fees needed to keep my friend safe and get her out of this house of horrors.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give y'all an update on Alicia's situation.

She met with a lawyer this week and went to court to negotiate the terms of the PFA she filed. The good news is that she will begin receiving court-mandated support funds of $500 per month from her ex. Their son Bob will reside with Alicia, and the ex may not come near her, or contact her at all except to coordinate pickup/dropoff of their son. The ex is required to undergo therapy and work with a domestic violence counselor as a condition of being allowed to maintain minimal visits with their son.

The PFA is good for a year. It does not negotiate permanent terms, so Alicia will still have to go to court to work those out before the divorce is finalized.

Here's where it gets a little tricky.

Legal fees for the divorce and custody arrangements are going to be around $3000. Alicia does have money saved up and is currently working, but will also need to dip into her reserves for moving costs when she finds a permanent place for her and Bob to stay. Also, since school is out for the summer, she will have to be creative in order to find childcare so she can work. Things will get a lot easier when classes begin again this fall.

We are so grateful to everyone who has shared this post, offered emotional support and happy thoughts, or donated. Knowing so many people want to help her is making a huge difference for Alicia. She's gone from feeling afraid and alone to beginning to see how strong she really is.

If there is anywhere you can share this page, or even a dollar you can contribute to this fund, please know you are helping a real person in a very immediate way. Thanks for reading.

Hey, y'all.

Thanks so much for all you've done for Alicia, by donating or sharing this page or both. She is so grateful to everyone who's offered support, not just through donations but through good thoughts and the desire to help.

Her legal consultation is tomorrow, so we'll know more (I hope) about what the court things will entail after that. I will update again after that with whatever she feels it's okay for me to share.

In the meantime, please think happy thoughts for her and Bob, pray if that's a thing you do, or just keep on being there for her in the ways you already do.

Lots of love.
