Hi I'm Abigail! I was born on October 16, 1992 in the beautiful city of Mexico and moved to Toronto, Canada in 2006. I am a 28 year old full of goals and loving life. In July of 2020 after undergoing a surgery to remove a “most likely benign” tumour, I was diagnosed with asymptomatic Stage 4 stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is one of the deadliest cancers in the world, but with the least research and developments. On top of that, there are no preventive protocols, especially for young patients, like myself, who are often brushed off as "young and healthy".
My journey has not been easy, I’ve had to advocate for myself numerous times to be heard and get the right help that I need to beat this cancer. From my family doctor not being able to diagnose me, to my oncologist giving me no hope to fight for my life. However, for me being diagnosed with cancer wasn’t the end of my life, instead I turned it to the beginning of living my life at its full potential. Some may call me optimistic, some delusional, and others may look up to me, but I refuse to let cancer define my life; because I have always lived and loved my life, but now LIVE life. I take the good and the bad, and learn from it.
And so, I knew I needed to advocate for my life and fight! With my cancer being so aggressive, I took things into my own hands and started pushing for the help that I needed. I found an oncologist who reciprocated with my beliefs and provided me with the support that I needed at Mount Sinai Hospital. She recommended going an immunotherapy treatment that uses the drug Opdivo, a drug that unfortunately has not been approved by Health Canada to be used for gastric cancer, but has been approved for other types of cancers, regardless of the studies that have shown that this drug works and the fact that this treatment is used in other countries as first line setting. We knew this drug would help because after getting tested for it, I was a good candidate. Furthermore, the statistics are there to show that it does work! with an increase of 44% of their patients getting better and a decrease of mortality rate by 32%!
However, this drug comes with a steep price of 10K a month to keep me alive. My insurance does not want to make an exception, even after showing that this drug works and is currently doing some magic in my body. My latest scan showed a 50% reduction of the cancer! As of now, my family and I have taken the burden to pay for my latest treatments, in hopes that we can get coverage. But it's getting to a point that I may not be able to pay for this in the long run. My parents have worked so hard to be able to provide to my sister and I, but I cannot let all of their life efforts be taken away to pay for this treatment. So here I am, pleading you to hear my story, share it and help me live a long life. Because that is all I ask, a long life. To be able to create memories, grow old, make a change and advocate! Because no one should be told that they have a life sentence and that their life has a price.

En Julio del 2020 al despertar de una cirugía para remover un tumour que según era "benigno", me diagnosticaron con cancer de estomago etapa 4. El cancer de estomago es uno de los mas mortales, pero es muy unpopular, con muy poca investigación y desarrollos. A demás no hay formas de prevención establecidas, específicamente en pacientes jóvenes, los cuales son caracterizados de ser "jóvenes y saludables".
Mi camino no ah sida nada fácil, he tenido que utilizar mi voz en varias ocaciones para poder obtener la ayuda necesaria y adecuada que necesito para vencer el cancer. Desde mi doctor familiar, hasta mi oncólogo, el cual no me dio nada de soporte. Sin embargo, para mí, el diagnostico con cancer no fue el fin de mi vida. Para mi, fue el inicio de vivir mi vida al 200%. Algunos piensas que soy optimista, delusional y otros que me admiran; pero yo niego que el cancer defina mi vida, por que ahora de verdad que VIVO mi vida. Tomo lo bueno y lo malo y aprendo de aquellos.
A lo tanto, yo sabia que tenia que utilizar mi boss para salvar mi vida y vivir! Con mi cancer siendo muy agresivo, me encargue del asunto con mis propias manos. Busque un oncólogo que creyera en mi, y peleara conmigo hasta vencer esto. Ella, me recomendó un tratamiento que utiliza imunoterapia, específicamente, la droga llamada Opdivo, un medicamento que desafortunadamente no ha sido aprobada por el ministerio de salud de Canada. Se debe mencionar, que este tratamiento normalmente se utiliza como primer forma de tratamiento en otros países para combatir el cancer de estomago. Ademas, el mismo ya se utiliza en el país para tratar otro tipo de cánceres y a demostrado en varios estudios que tiene muchos beneficios para pacientes con cancer de estomago. Las estadísticas han demostrado que funciona! Con un incremento de mejora del 44% y una disminución de la tasa de mortalidad del 32%!
Sin embargo, este tratamiento viene con el gran precio de $10 mil dólares Canadienses al mes para poder mantenme viva. Desafortunadamente, mi aseguradora se niega a cubrir los gastos y el gobierno de Canada tampoco me ha podido ayudar. A pesar de que en mi ultimo scan el tratamiento ha demostrado que esta funcionando, ya que mi cancer se a reducido a casi la mitad de su tamaño. Hasta ahorita, mi familia y yo nos hemos encargado de pagar este tratamiento, pero esta no es una solución la cual podamos tomar en un futuro. Mi familia esta utilizando todos sus ahorros para poder ayudarme y salvar mi vida. Así que les pido, que por favor consideren ayudarme a vencer este cancer! Ayuda me ha poder tener la oportunidad de pelear y ganarle a este cancer; para poder tener una vida larga! Por que de verdad que amo mi vida! Y todo lo que pido en esta vida es poder seguir creando memorias, crecer y hacerme viejita, hacer un cambio y ser defensora contra este cancer! Nadie merece tener una vida de sentencia y la vida de uno no debería tener un precio.
