Help a Teacher Explore Europe

Last April, I received an award for teaching. My family and I will be shipping off to the Netherlands to live there for 6 months. During that time, I will conduct research on the Dutch education system through the University of Amsterdam.

While living expenses are covered, it additional travel is not. My goal is to raise money so that I can visit important historical and cultural sites around Europe and create video lectures, interviews, and curriculum that can be used in my class and in other social studies classes around the country.

Not only is the Netherlands historically rich (the stock market, Van Gogh, Anne Frank, etc.), but within a 300 mile radius is the Palace of Versailles, Normandy, the Western Front, Wittenberg (where Martin Luther published his 95 Theses), Auschwitz, and innumerable other historically relevant places. I want to visit these locations, learn more about them, and create on-site lectures, interviews, and lesson plans that my students will be able to see for years to come. I have 160 students per year, and I plan to teach for at least 30 more years. Now, I’m not a math teacher, but I am pretty sure that is 4800 children who will receive a more robust education from me.

Getting the opportunity to visit these locations will enable me to create lesson plans that capture my students’ imaginations, give them a love for history, and allow me to share a more robust understanding of the world.
