Help 21 months old Therayu get treatment for high risk Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare form of cancer

Therayu is an amazing 21 months old little boy who lives with his mum Champa and dad Dara in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. When he was one year old, he was diagnosed with high risk Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH).

LCH is a rare type of cancer that can damage tissue or cause lesion to form in one or more places in the body. It is most common with young children, like Therayu. It that can damage tissue or cause lesions to form in one or more places in the body. LCH is a rare form of cancer, which touches 1 to 2 in 100,00 people, mostly children. You can learn more about the disease here  and here.

In 2017, when he was only a few months old, Therayu developed what appeared to be a skin allergy and then a lump on his head. After repeated treatments in Cambodia, including 4 operations in a few days, Champa had concerns with the diagnoses provided. In June 2018, Champa decided to go to Thailand, which is known for having better hospitals than Cambodia. There, at Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok, Therayu was finally diagnosed with high risk Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). According to what the doctor told Champa, has Therayu been diagnosed earlier, the cancer could have been cured without need for chemotherapy.

Since this devastating news, Therayu has had 2 rounds of chemotherapy and other related treatments. While they started the treatment in Thailand, due to their financial restrictions, Champa and Dara were left with no choice but to continue the chemotherapy in Cambodia. To date, Therayu is being treated at Sunrise japan hospital in Phnom Penh. Last week, Therayu finished the second phase of his treatment, which consisted in 2 sessions of 4 days chemotherapy. According to what doctors in Thailand and in Cambodia told Champa and Dara, there is a 50% chance that the treatment will be successful. They will know the results after a blood test in the last week of March. Depending of the results, little Therayu may need to undertake a third phase of treatment, including chemotherapy, with chances of success reportedly being less than 50%.

Champa and Dara are doing everything possible to provide the best future for their son. They have modest earnings: Champa works in the administration of a Cambodian university, while Dara is an electrician. They sold the land property they owned to pay for the treatment, and had to borrow money from close relatives to pay for the repeated trips to Thailand for treatment over the past year. Unfortunately, Champa and Dara are running out of options to pay for Therayu’s treatment.  The reality here is that the cost of the best ongoing treatment for Therayu is way beyond the resources of this hardworking Cambodian family.

After learning about a crowdfunding campaign which was done for law students at the university where Champa works, they asked me, Léa, who had helped the students fundraise, to help them start a crowdfunding campaign for Therayu’s treatment. I am a French lawyer who has been working and living in Phnom Penh for the past three years, and I taught at Champa’s university a few times. This is where I met her, though a common friend.

In order to ensure that Therayu has access to the best treatment possible, Champa and Dara would like to bring Therayu to Singapore, which has the best hospitals in the region (it was rated 62th out of 136 countries in terms of healthcare, while Thailand was 90th and Cambodia 109th, World Economic Forum Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, p. 36), get a second medical opinion. The hospital that Champa found is called KK children and women hospital.

According to our calculations, the family would need about 2,000 USD to pay for the plane tickets, the hospital costs and the hotel in Singapore. In addition, in Cambodia, they need to pay for an x-ray, and may need to pay for another chemotherapy. This would cost about 1,000 USD in total (4 days of chemotherapy cost 800 USD, an x-ray is about 150-200 USD). As a result, we are fundraising for 3,000 USD. Because of the exchange rate loss and bank fees, the fundraising amount in euros is 2,800 euros. They would need the funds as soon as possible, and ideally within the next two weeks, in order to continue Therayu’s treatment at this stage; however the treatment will likely to be ongoing, and therefore we will continue to fundraise over the next few months to cover it.

Should we not be able to fundraise enough for Therayu to go to Singapore, Champa and Dara will then bring him back to the hospital in Bangkok to continue his treatment there, instead of Cambodia.

Léa is the one organizing the crowdfunding on behalf of Champa and Dara. Since the platform does not allow us to include a Cambodian address, the campaign is marked as based in France - we used Léa’s home address there. The funds raised will be transferred to Léa’s bank account in France, who will then purchase the plane tickets for Champa, Dara and Therayu, and give the rest of the money in cash to Champa, for her to pay for the medical treatment.

Thank you very much for reading us! We are most grateful for any support you can give, be it a donation, or simply sharing the campaign through social medias, email, and in any way you can.

THANK YOU!

Champa, Dara, Therayu and Léa.
