We’re are back in construction!

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us, sent emails of support or inquired about our opening status.

Backstory: Owners Andy & Amy
Andy - In Winter of 2015, Andy found a small-shared space in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. He grew up in the Boyle Heights community. Amy & Andy thought of opening a space where students were able to come in and do homework, a tutoring meet up space, and also provide a leave one take one comic book stand. We wanted to open up Cake Girl, a community-based bakery serving those in the neighborhood. Cake girl provides a space for those in the community while offering allergy-friendly pastry items.

Amy - She grew up in the neighborhood of El Sereno, from the same district and neighbor to Boyle Heights. Her passion for baking came from helping her father prep in the family kitchen as a child. Her father’s influence has inspired her to take chances, to work hard, and to follow her passion for pastry and baking. In 2012, she founded Cake Girl, an allergy-friendly home-based bakery. She catered to baby showers, birthdays, weddings and local coffee shops. After years of baking in a tiny kitchen, it was time for her to expand into a new bigger space.

Recap of 2016
Beginning in 2016, we started a fundraiser to help with initial city permits/fees and construction.  We began our journey through the city clearance list, going through each city department/agency and presenting them our floor plans. Each department was as expensive and difficult as the previous one.  We also started on some construction to bring our space up to code: shaving off parts of the counter, calculating the oven hood and plumbing. The funds that were raised quickly depleted in Fall 2016, Andy & I paused our project to work at our full-time jobs to fund city fees.

Current 2017

Winter 2017 now, Cake Girl is back and ready for construction! But we need your help again.

Final construction:
1. Bring counters up to code & provide accessibility counter
2. Shift bar stools
3. Wrap oven hood with heat proof coating
4. Build a handicap accessibility ramp
5. Modify electrical wiring
6. Repair hand sink plumbing
7. Move grease tramp

Equipment:
1. Electric convection oven
2. Commercial water heater
3. Air curtain for back entrance

Total estimated to be around $30,000. However, $10,000 would help us greatly! We would like to begin construction as soon as possible and to be up and running by spring 2018.  Please help fund the final steps of our project by donating to Cake Girl’s gofundme.com page, by sharing our story, by attending pop up events, by ordering ahead for your next special occasion. Any proceeds will help our project move forward.

We are truly grateful for everyone’s support throughout the years.

A special thank you to our architect Daniel Ziese at Ziese Architecture who has helped and guided our project from the very beginning.
