Dear friends and family,
We are reaching out for your support of Heather - our friend, neighbor, family member - and her 2 boys, Hayden (13) and Grayson (10).
On December 15th, in the middle of the night, Heather's ex-husband tried to burn her house down with her and the boys inside, by dousing the area surrounding the house with gasoline and lighting it. Amazingly, Hayden saw the flames outside and was able to put the fire out himself with their fire extinguisher while Heather called the fire department. Physically, they are all safe and unharmed, but mentally and psychologically, they are shaken and scared.
There is no way to understand what drove her ex-husband to do such a thing, but he has struggled with alcoholism for many years. In addition to the incident on the 15th of December, there have been countless other times where his erratic and aggressive behavior have wreaked havoc on their lives.
These issues - alcoholism, mental health, and domestic violence - carry so much stigma, but the victims' hardships are no less significant and real than a medical issue like cancer or a physical disability.
We are humbled by Heather's bravery and strength to not only share her story, but to perservere in doing everything she can to create a stable and supportive life for her boys, in spite of all they have endured. In addition, she is now faced with covering significant expenses on her own in the coming months and years to ensure that she and the boys are safe and supported.
We are asking for your support to rally behind Heather and her boys. Any amount will mean so much to her and her family to help alleviate some of the financial burden. Here are a few of the expenses we are hoping to help cover:
$10,000 - Legal expenses
$3,500 - Counseling for Heather and boys
$500 - Alarm and security system for house
$6,000 - Health insurance
$5,000 - College fund
