Healing Hudson's Renal Failure

***UPDATE:

Hudson's prognosis is still pretty terrible, but we were able to experience some miracles that are amazing reminders to continue fighting...

I am completely overwhelmed with all the love and financial support friends, family, and even random stranger angels have given.

Today, we not only reached our goal- we exceeded it...I cannot thank you enough. Every single donation shows a tremendous gesture and we are so grateful that there are such kind-hearted people out there. This is something that I will always remember to pay forward...

Thank you soooo soo much.

Here's a quick update video ( :

Just want to premise this with:

Never thought in a million years I'd be starting one of these...

Anyone who knows me or Dez knows how much we love our little Hudson Bear. Six and a half years ago, we lost our first dog, Comet- who we rescued earlier that year, from getting run over by a car. He died in my arms and we weren't expecting, nor ready to adopt another dog so soon after such a traumatizing event. While visiting New York, our friends who lived there had just adopted Hudson, but couldn't keep him. After meeting Hudson for the first time, we decided we couldn't leave him without knowing whether or not he was going to go to a good home. Dez and I decided to give it another shot as a second chance at giving a dog an awesome, fulfilled life.

(Flying Hudson to Los Angeles from his birthplace in New York)

For the past 6 years, he's been a healthy pup and I've been bringing him in for regular check-ups. We take him with us almost everywhere we go. He attends our family/friend parties, flies, travels, and sleeps with us- he's family.

On January 17th, 2017 he was unexpectedly diagnosed with Acute Renal Failure after we noticed some strange behavior and loss of appetite. Doctors say he tested positive for Leptospirosis, an extremely rare bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals. We think he contracted it from a family of raccoons in our neighborhood, since raccoons are known to carry the disease.

We were absolutely devastated to learn that the bacteria severely damaged his kidneys within just days of entering his body. We're currently hoping that there's still a chance to repair them.

As pet parents we feel it's necessary to do whatever it takes to provide a good quality of life for our pets and reciprocate the unconditional love and loyalty that they show us and others on a daily basis.

To be completely blunt and transparent, we've already spent around $30,000 so far for Dialysis, hospitalization, medication, a much-needed blood transfusion, and stem cell therapy. All of this just to buy him some time in hopes for his kidneys to self-heal and start working again. The doctors said that with dialysis, there's a 50/50 chance that dogs with ARF and the inability to produce urine could turn around for the better. The only other alternative was to put him down immediately, without giving him a chance to potentially self-heal. Since we knew we'd regret not giving him at least a fighting chance, we invested a substantial chunk of our savings without hesitation. Unfortunately, it's not over. He hasn't made a full recovery yet, and the medical bills are continuing to pile up on top of our regular bills and school loans:

Although we understand he's our dog and our responsibility, this is an expensive endeavor and we're doing the best we can to buy him some time and provide him the best chance for recovery from this horrific disease. By no means are we asking anyone to pay for our entire bill...Ideally, we are taking responsibility and absorbing most of the cost, but I told myself I would do everything in my power to help Hudson, including having humility and admitting we could use all the help we can get. As hard as Dez and I are working to help Hudson, the two of us can only do so much. We're running out of time and it's an emergency.

Pretty soon, the prognosis may get so bad that euthanasia might be the only humane option left. Dez and I have been performing targeted pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (tPEMF) on Hudson's kidneys at least 4 times a day and am hoping the stem cell therapy helps to kick start his kidneys back up again. Regardless, we still have to continue his dialysis, which is the only thing keeping him alive at the moment- he has yet to produce urine on his own.

We're looking for some help from our community of family, friends, and fellow animal lovers to give this young pup a fighting chance during this incredibly difficult and emotionally challenging time. As I mentioned above, we are absorbing most of the cost, but anything helps towards his dialysis treatments and upcoming stem cell treatment.

Many of you who know Hudson know that he's a special dog worth fighting for. He's full of character, very intelligent, loving, and is probably the loudest snoring, living thing in the world. He is loved by many and we've been fighting hard for his recovery.

Please don't feel obligated, because anything and everything is appreciated, especially sharing this post to others. If you do have the means, no amount is too small. We are also extremely grateful for all the wishes and prayers along with any helpful information on Acute Renal Failure.

Any donations left over following Hudson's treatments will go towards the AKC Canine Health Foundation, which supports basic science discovery and clinical research into the treatment of renal and urologic disorders through the Renal Disease Research Program.

Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the support everyone has given me, Dez, and Hudson thus far.

Love,

Mizziel
