Deir Mar Musa Al-Habashi

£1,525 of £100,000 goal

I have been a friend of the Community of Al-Khalil at Deir Mar Musa al-Habashi in Syria since I was a young student and have seen first hand the work they did to bring Muslims and Christians closer together before the Civil War.
Now they have continued this work by taking in internally displaced people and rebuilding homes ravaged by fighting in neighbouring villages. They help ANYBODY in need regardless of faith, but desperately need help to build sanitary facilities and shelters for those unable to return home, as well as to feed and provided medical care to several thousand internal refugees.
Very little outside aid is getting to Syria but here is a chance to get money to people on the ground and in a position to help right now! Please help!

Hello! Sorry that we are a few days late, but here is the promised update on life with the Mar Musari! We spent last week in Italy with Fr Jihad and Sr Carol and delivered the first £735 (€905) to them for the Community. They send many thanks to all their supporters and will be sending us their annual "letter to the friends of Mar Musa" soon - which we shall post here for you all to read.

In Syria many of the internally displaced people have now tried to return to their homes, which has taken some of the immediate pressure off of the Community and now the priority has changed to long-term support. They continue to work on the restoration of homes in local towns and villages that were damaged in fighting last year and attempt to re-home local families where some houses were completely destroyed. However their main efforts now are directed towards providing continuity in social care by paying for:
- Medical care for local people
- Formula milk and nappies for infants
- Supporting families financially so that they can afford to let students can continue their studies

Over in Sulaimanieh (Kurdistan) Fr Yohanna continues to shelter approximately 300 displaced Christians from around Mosul and their long-term situation remains uncertain.

Sr Carol and Fr Jihad have asked us to thank each of their supporters individually and to say that your offerings and prayers mean a great deal to them at this difficult time.

We will write soon with more news and would like to add our personal thanks to those of the Community of Al-Khalil!

Shukran jezilan!

Thank you very much to those who have contributed so far! In early January I am visiting Fr. Jihad and Sr. Carol in Italy and will take them all the money raised so far.
Fr. Jihad is returning to Syria in February and so will take the donations with him so that the Community can decide where the money is most useful....
Sr. Huda is Mother Superior until Paolo returns and it would be lovely to take one of her burdens from her by sending enough money to help them support themselves and the local families and refugees who depend on them for a few months!

Dear All,

I am trying to raise money for Deir Mar Musa and I would be grateful if everyone could circulate this link to anybody that they think might be able to help...The Community have really been struggling financially and I thought that Paolo's 60th birthday was the right day to try and achieve something positive on his behalf - wherever he is right now I always send him a birthday present and so this is my 60th birthday present to him!!
