Halifax Developmental Centre has offered early childhood education and inclusive programming since 1967. Our programs are designed to provide early learning opportunities for children who have complex needs that cannot be accommodated in typical programs. We offer enhanced ratios with highly trained staff, visual supports, wheelchair lifts, adaptive technologies, and Snoezelen (multi-sensory) rooms so that ALL children can participate in our programs and realize their full potential in a truly inclusive environment.
For decades, our Centre has operated within Joseph Howe Elementary School in the North End of Halifax. Just last week, our organization received notice from HRSB that due to the need for a new pre-primary classroom, we will need to vacate our office space within less than a week. This space is used for early intervention team meetings, advocacy and referral services, employability skills placements, and a parent support group. As a not-for-profit, charity organization, we are already highly under-resourced and struggling to meet the demands of the community.

We have met with HRSB, and this move is non-negotiable. Not only are we losing our office space where we offer all support services, but we have been given no assurance from HRSB that the entire Centre is safe from future eviction. In the short term, we are in need of an office space to operate our Inclusion & Family Support services. In the long term, we are seeking a new space for Halifax Developmental Centre where our program is valued, appreciated, and able to grow to meet the needs of our families.
We are reaching out to our community partners for your support with the expenses of moving, storage, disconnecting/reconnecting phone & internet, and potentially a lease in a new space.
Every dollar counts and is a huge help to us. The support from our community during this challenging time has meant so much to us, and we are committed to standing strong in the face of adversity.
