We found out, around a month ago, that our 7 month old Alaskan Shephard has serve hip dysplasia on both sides. His right side is almost completely disjointed from the socket. This is something we’ve been told he was born with and nothing due to his upbringing. This has completely changed his active life, by not being able to go for his long walks, no jumping, and quick movements kept to a minimum and absolutely no stairs, in fear of the whole joint popping out. After speaking to multiple vets and specialists, we discussed would we think would be best for our fluffy boy. That decision, is hip replacements on both sides. This ensures he will be able to lead the most active and healthy life he possibly can, rather than risking a life riddled with arthritis and lots of pain. Each hip will cost upwards of £5000 as he’s so young and not completely fully grown yet. We were also told by the specialist, that it’s a high possibility he also has elbow dysplasia, so we will also be checking up on that throughout this journey.

Amongst all this saddening news, we took a trip to the vets for a possible change in pain medication, as he had stopped wanting to eat completely, only for him to be kept straight away for more xrays. We then found out he had Gastric dilatation volvulus, and foreign substances in his stomach. He had been showing no physical symptoms of pain and we were told by our vet that most dogs in the same situation as him would be in the floor, unable to move, yelping in pain. But somehow our boy wasn’t letting on any discomfort to us whatsoever. By sheer luck was this caught at the last second by the vet, before his stomach turned and could’ve turned fatal.
(The black bubble is the pocket of gas in his stomach)

After almost 48 hours on an IV drip of fluids, the bloat had disappeared and everything flushed out his system, luckily avoiding more surgery.

We are so grateful to the vets who have been amazing with him, making sure he’s as comfortable as possible.  We’re now just asking for help, towards mainly the cost of the hip replacements, but also for all the unexpected vet bills, whatever our insurance isn’t covering, (which is a lot), and for the time taken out of work to look after our boy. Thank you in advance if you’ve read this far, and for sharing or helping us in any little way ♥️
