Meet Maverick. This big guy is a gentle giant.

His owner, who didn’t take very good care of Maverick decided that he didn’t want him anymore and dumped him at a shelter.

He is a full blooded shepherd with the most amazing personality we have ever seen. He is extremely well behaved and loves everyone.  He is extremely sensitive to the world.  One of the employees of the kennel he was being boarded at had a seizure at work and Maverick stood over her the entire time.

It became very clear to the employees of the shelter that he was in rough shape and  needed extensive veterinary needs.  He is very underweight, not neutered and was covered in fleas. His ears are infected with yeast and bacteria and had been bleeding from scratching them.  He has several lesions from scratching from the fleas. They could tell he had some issues with his back legs but were unsure of what it might be. Maverick also tested positive for heart worm.

Knowing it would be a hard case, he pulled at the heart strings of the director of Always Hope Animal Rescue.
“I just couldn’t say no”

Upon Maverick’s arrival on Thursday 11/2 we realized just how special this boy was. He’s about 5 years old and just as sweet and loving as can be.  His fur is thin from the flea reactions and his lesions were infected. His ears were packed with debris. We had planned ahead and already had an appointment scheduled with a vet for that next morning where we learned that Maverick has degenerate neuropathy. The good news is he doesn’t have to have surgery, the bad news is there is no cure and he will eventually get worse.

Our “plan of attack” is to get Maverick neutered first and give him a week to rest from being fixed.   He will then start his heart worm treatment which is not only expensive but also very painful. We are having a blood test done with a neurologist to confirm the neuropathy. This test is also very expensive.

Always Hope is a 501c3 nonprofit rescue completely run by volunteers. We do not have any paid employees. We try and take the tougher cases on but we often find ourselves short on funds. We are asking for help with Maverick’s medical costs.AlwaysHopeAnimalRescue.org

Maverick had his MRI today. Good news, the neurologist does not think it's surgical. He believes there is some sort of infection in Maverick's spine. Not sure if it's fungal or bacterial. We are also having a spinal tap done today and hopefully we'll get the results back to confirm what it is next week.

He is on an antibiotic which would be the same line of treatment for the infection. He continues to gain weight and do well in his foster home which is now going to be his forever home. Maverick is where he should be.

Thank you to all who have donated to help out with Maverick's bills. They have now grown to over $3,500 and help is still needed and appreciated.

Our hearts are smiling. God is so good to give us this Christmas miracle. ♡♡♡♡ Here is a picture of Maverick with his new brother.

Update on Maverick.

He had a small set back. He had a tough time after we was taking off his pain meds and steroids. Poor boy wasn't feeling good. After doing blood work to check his organ function we have put him back on them and he's gotten better and is back to eating.

Maverick's MRI is scheduled for Monday December 18th. This will be a big step as it will tell us what is happening with his spine and back. Attached are pictures from his last visit to the vet. <3

We will keep you posting on Maverick.

Maverick, our heartworm positive German Shepherd had his final heartworm treatment last night. Feeling a little punky today but still wagging his tail. Next step, MRI to figure out what is going on with his back legs. ♡♡♡ his foster mom bought him a stuffed cow for his bravery.

Maverick had his first heart worm treatment last night. HE KICKED BUTT!!!! His foster mom was a wreck but Maverick sat still for the injection and is continuing to eat and drink. We know he's uncomfortable but he is still being his sweet usual self.

After a few weeks of his heart worm treatments we will be able to schedule his MRI. This is the part that will really be expensive and a challenge for Always Hope. We want to thank all of you that have donated.

Maverick can use any prayers and good thoughts you can send his way. <3
