Hannah "STRONG" Duckson

Hannah would have been a senior at Iowa State University in 2 short weeks.  She has worked extremely hard to achieve a 3.84 GPA.  Her major is Pre-Med and she planned to go to medical school a year from now.  She was going to be the President of the Pre-Med Club on campus and is a sister at ADPI this year.

On Thursday, August 8th, at 9:30 p.m., Hannah was a passenger on a motorcycle that was involved in an serious accident.   The accident occurred in Savage at the T intersection at the corner of County Road 27 and 160th Street.  The motorcycle was traveling down County Road 27 and instead of turning left or right at the intersection, it went straight at the T and she was thrown from the motorcycle at least 40 feet, skidded on the paved road and landed in a swamp grassland area.

Both the driver and Hannah were immediately transported to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.   Since she had life threatening injuries, they immediately performed emergency surgery.   The injuries that Hannah sustained from the accident include a concussion, broken femur in her left leg, broken vertebraes in her lower back right below her spinal cord, a long deep laceration from her inner groin area to the top of her hip, multiple spiral fractures in her pelvis, damage to her wrist and elbows, severe road rash on her stomach, back and hands.  Her left leg also sustained loss of skin and bone from the accident.

She's had two surgeries to cleanse debris from her leg and protect it from infection. After her first two surgeries, Hannah developed a dead skin condition called Morel Lavallee and the doctors were concerned about operating on her leg as she would be high risk for infection.  They cultured and watched it closely and decided to proceed with the surgery.   She had her third surgery which placed 1 rod down the middle of the femur bone and three screws. The surgeon told us she is extremely lucky as part of her shattered femur bone almost hit her femoral artery which would have taken her precious life. She has a guardian angel!   When she gets past this, the doctors will make a plan to fix her pelvis area (both structurally and cosmetically) and the ball joint.  Either a lengthy recovery on it’s own or another surgery.   As far as her back fractures, she will wear a brace until they heal.

After her leg and pelvis are “fixed”, we’ll determine what bone and skin graphing surgeries will be needed to repair the bone and skin loss in her left leg. We're unsure how many at this point. The doctors think it will take her 1 year to recover.

Before Hannah is ready go home and start the healing process, she’ll have weeks of physical therapy either at the hospital or a dedicated overnight facility to learn the day-to-day basics of life in a wheelchair.  Once she's able to go home, there’ll be 3 months where she won’t be able to put weight on either leg because of the significant pelvis injuries. God willing, after 3 months, she’ll be able to withstand some weight on her legs and hopefully begin using a walker for the next several months.   There’s a significant chance she’ll have a permanent limp in her left leg.  Time will tell.
