Case Garner's Family & Medical Fund

Hi! This is Case’s grandparents, Diane and Doug Garner and Holli and Oscar Smith.  Case’s parents are our son/son-in-law, Christopher Garner and our daughter/daughter-in-law Jenna Garner.

This is the short but important story of Case William Garner, born 10/22/14, the son of Christopher and Jenna Garner, baby brother of Jett, and unparalleled prize fighter.  Case was born with cystic hygromas which are fluid filled sacs in his windpipe, face, and neck.  The cysts in his windpipe and under his tongue are the main problem.  Because they are blocking his airway, he has had problems breathing.  He is currently being well cared for by his parents and the excellent health professionals at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC.  He has been in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for over 2 weeks and our hope is that he will be home very soon.

On 11/13/14, Case was extubated but was unable to breathe on his own.  The skilled physicians had already attempted 2 procedures, one to cut the cysts, and sclerotherapy which applies an antibiotic/chemotherapy drug to the cysts.  Both these procedures were successful in shrinking the cysts in the throat and unblocking the airway.  Unfortunately, due to the cyst under his tongue he is still unable to breathe on his own and underwent a tracheotomy.  The trach could be in for another 6-12 months or until he is older and strong enough to have the remaining surgeries and treatments to take care of the other cysts.

Case continues to fight even though he has been hooked to machines and oxygen most of his young life.  The family lives in Hagerstown, MD and the separation of the family (2 hours) has been excruciating.  The family has health insurance, but as we all know, this does not cover all the costs of separation, care, and daily living.

Home care nurses when Case is discharged

We thank you for reading our important story.  Case is a beautiful soul with bright eyes and energetic spirit.  He is strong and resilient.  Our goal in asking for help is to give him and his family every opportunity to heal, physically, mentally and emotionally.
