Seattle Education Assoc. Members say END IMMIGRANT CHILD DETENTION!

How can ANY educator not be horrified by the inhumane separation of families, and the detention of immigrant children at our Southern border?  I have felt a visceral tug to do something, to add my voice to the voices of thousands -- millions -- of educators and human rights activists who are calling for an END to CHILD DETENTION NOW!

I want to go to southwest Texas in February, to join teachers calling for the immediate release of immigrant children being held in detention. But I need your help.

My name is Jennifer Hall.  I am a hard-working Special Education Teacher for grades 9-12 at West Seattle High School. I am a member of our school's Equity Team, and I serve as advisor for several student clubs, including our Diversity Club and our Earth Club/Green Team. I was a building representative for several years, and I am currently on the Seattle Education Association's Board of Directors.

I’m also a member of Teachers Against Child Detention (TACD), a group of teachers, immigrant rights organizations and ordinary people concerned about the welfare of incarcerated immigrant children. TACD is led by Mandy Manning, the 2018 National Teacher of the Year.
Tens of thousands of immigrant children are in the custody of the U.S. government, many under appalling conditions that violate U.S. law. These children have done nothing wrong. As a teacher, I know that detention of children can cause irreparable damage to their well-being and development. Children belong in school, and with loved ones who can care for them.
On Sunday, February 17, 2019, TACD will stage a live streamed “Teach-In For Freedom” in El Paso, Texas, where we will call on the U.S. government to end the detention and criminalization of immigrant children and their families.
I would like to represent Seattle and Washington State at the Teach-In For Freedom. To attend, I need to raise funds to cover my travel and lodging costs and help pay for the cost of the teach-in. I have purchased a travel package on credit, but as a parent paying college tuition and rent for my child,  the expenditure has put me over my budgetary limits.  I would also like to donate funds to Teachers Against Child Detention, to offset the upcoming teach-in, as well as future organizing events. I I would be grateful if you’d support me by making a donation to this GoFundMe campaign.
I promise that in addition to participating in/and supporting the February Teach-in in El Paso, I will  be doing the following:
 • Teaching  lessons to the students in my own classroom and throughout my high school about freedom, and about the injustice of imprisoning kids who have done nothing wrong. • Holding my own Teach-In in my community to educate about the harm of detention, the reasons why the children came here, and what Americans can do to call upon our federal government to release them and close these detention camps.
Your support is very much appreciated. I hope you will join me as we take action to ensure that no innocent immigrant child on US soil is held in a detention camp. Many thanks.
