Haleys Transplant Fund
Haley Matheson is 15 years old, she had become sick with a cold at the beginning of December. After a couple of weeks, she had become more ill.
On December 23 her mother Marion McPhee took Haley into the QEH where symptoms rapidly progressed from bad to worse. We were shocked and saddened to hear that Haley had a much more serious condition.
She had lost most vision in her left eye and her blood work came back with no white blood cells, low platelet counts and her hemoglobin critically low. They gave Haley a blood transfusion and the QEH staff had made the call to transfer her to the IWK in Halifax by ambulance. Leukemia was the suspected cause of her symptoms.
One day before Christmas she arrived at the IWK for a very stressful and grueling week. Where she recieved more blood transfusions, and testing. There were many prayers sent by friends and family for questions to be answered.
On December 31 the team of specialists had come in with a diagnoses. APlastic Anemia; a rare disease that causes a deficiency in all 3 blood cells. It is not known what has caused the disease. It was a bittersweet moment for all as everyone had praised the Lord that Leukemia had been ruled out but, Haley's only treatment to survive is a bone marrow transplant.
Her little brother, 11 year old Reece was brave enough to do testing to see if he would be a match. Some results have come back and the doctors believe he is a good match for Haley and with a bit more testing to follow it looks like Haley's little brother will be her true little hero.
Though it has been extremely difficult, Haley is strong willed. Her mother has not left her bedside and has taken an undetermined amount of time from work, as this will be a long journey of recovery to good health.
So please help Haley and her family by donating to cover costs such as medical and travel. We are all still waiting to hear if she will be able to stay in Halifax for the bone marrow transplant or if the specialist will be transferring Haley to Toronto.
