Hi My name is melanie fink and i am doing this for a dear friend here is their story
Hello, my name is Katrina Ford. I am a wife to a loving husband Gareth, and mother to two beautiful
children; Emerson 4 months and Saphira 3 ½ years. I write this letter to you with a lot of support and
encouragement from family and friends to put aside my pride and ask for assistance for something that we
as a single income family just cannot afford but desperately require to continue function within our day to
day.....which brings us to our daughter.
Please allow me give a proper introduction to our little ray of sunshine, our daughter Saphira. Saphira is a
gorgeous little girl who suffers from severe Dystonic/Spastic quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy and a global
developmental delay. She is the sparkle in our eye and keeps us grounded and able to enjoy the simple
things in life. Her smiles lights up the room and we would not have her any other way. Although blessed with
such a smiley, giggly ball of happiness there are a few things that make our family very different from the
norm....and although we refuse to look upon our situation with any negativity there are some things which
are just simple fact.
Due to Saphira’s severity and being a quadriplegic she is completely immobile and fully dependant on us to
get her through her day to day. There is a lot of equipment that comes along with the territory of having a
child with a disability, and as she gets older the more equipment we seem to require and the bigger the
equipment is becoming. Currently we have a vehicle that meets our needs and requirements; however it is
beginning to become quite obvious that in the very near future this vehicle will no longer be adequate for
Saphira or our family. Not to mention that unfortunately there will come a time when Saphira will be too
heavy for me to lift and carry in and out of the car and I will have to resort to using assistance.
With this in mind a modified Vehicle would greatly assist us and will be what we require for Saphira, and all
of her equipment, as well as comfortably fitting in the rest of the family. Unfortunately although being
exactly what we need the expense of a modified vehicle is way beyond our reach.
This is the part that with a deep breath I swallow my pride and ask you, if you are able to
help us. As a family we have never asked for anything and have always supported ourselves in providing for
our families needs. However this time it is just not possible and we therefore ask for your assistance in
helping us to purchase a modified vehicle. In doing this you will allow both Gareth and I to continue to meet
our families needs and provide support and mobility to our daughter so that she may continue to attend
therapy sessions, specialist appointments and school, as well as for us as a family to be able to continue
together as a unit.
