Meet our beautiful son and trisomy warrior, James Julian Ashe.

James was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 at 32 weeks in the womb. Trisomy 18 is a devastating chromosomal disease that leads to numerous severe health problems including severe developmental delays, mental and physical handicap, heart defects, respiratory difficulties, and early death. Many babies with Trisomy 18 do not survive to be born. Those that do survive often live very short lives.

James is the youngest of our 3 children (Catherine and Jim). We have 2 older children - Evaline (5) and Hazel (3).

I am an emergency veterinarian in Asheville, NC. Jim is a teacher at Western Governor's University and works from home.

We are dedicated to our family, and this has come as a huge blow to us. We are absolutely willing and able to give James every chance at a happy, fulfilling life - however long that life may be.

James spent 13 days in the NICU after he was born, came home for 6 short days, and then was re-hospitalized at 3 weeks of age for severe heart failure due to his heart defects. He was not expected to live long. He came home on hospice care, and we thought he had a few weeks to maybe a month.

Amazingly, James came home and began to thrive. We had 5 wonderful months with him. He was doted upon by his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters, doctors, and parents. He was truly a light in this world.

On January 2, James left this world cradled in our arms. It was the most bittersweet moment of our lives. We were there when he was born, and he we were there with him when he died.

At this time, we are still lost in a fog of shock, sorrow, and grief. The generosity of so many friends, family, and complete strangers has made it possible for me to stay home from work most of the time and care for James. At this time, I am not sure when I will return to work. I hope to be able to return in the next few months. In the interim, this GFM account has helped us tremendously.

Thank you for considering helping our family at this incredibly difficult time.
