David “Birdie” PetersRemembering Birdie - A Special Message:

July 21, 1950 – December 21, 2015

On December 21, 2015, the world lost one of the good guys. Birdie Peters passed away suddenly at home. Family and friends were shocked at the news of his passing; our unofficial Mayor of Ben Eoin left our small community too soon.

For years he worked at our ski hill and golf course. He could be seen each day walking around always focused on his next task while making people smile and laugh with his famous one-liners. No job was too big or too small for Birdie and he was never afraid to help others or make sure the job was completed.

Birdie was a genuine and honest man. Although his voice was rough and sometimes loud, kids would surround him and wait on his next word. He loved watching kids having fun and enjoying themselves at Ben Eoin, and he likely had just as much fun as they did during the day. In July my daughter had a chance to meet Birdie. Like so many kids before her, she immediately took to him. He just had a way about him that made kids want to tell him stuff. He had a unique style of letting kids talk first and open up. And, he loved giving gifts to kids and staff. When he would get a gift for someone he would walk away almost sheepishly and embarrassed because he didn’t want to take any credit.

Birdie was affable and pure of heart, with a special way of getting to know people and the ‘goings-on’ in their lives. He was a great listener and loved to know what was happening each day. Quite simply, he was always interested in what people had to say. Sometimes we would be sitting together and I would start checking my phone, then Birdie would be quick to say “would you put that thing away so we can just talk?” He pulled no punches no matter who you were.

Birdie was a man who touched the hearts of many people. If you were happy, Birdie was happy. He cared for people. He was at his best with a small group and he loved telling jokes and stories. When he entered the room, he was always greeting people and making his presence known. From my first day back home to Cape Breton I met Birdie. What an interesting first day. “How’s she goin' now young fella?” he quickly said.

We could all take some lessons in life from our friend Birdie, on how to act and treat each other. Living a life full of friends and family and making people laugh, not taking yourself so serious, and calling things out when it’s fake or wrong.

Birdie, someday we will have a Caesar with you up in Heaven. Rest in Peace our dear friend. The sadness of your death has left us, is nothing compared to the incredible joy and fun that your life gave us.

Gone, but never forgotten.
