Gustav Weindorfer Memorial at Wilmot Tasmania

Wilmot - North West Tasmania

Wilmot is a now small village in North West Tasmania halfway between Devonport and Cradle Mountain.

Wilmot was a bustling, thriving town since the 1800's and was the place where early expeditions to Cradle Mountain would depart after resting and getting supplies.

In the late 1960's Lake Barrington was created by damming the Forth River and the immediate effect was to isolate Wilmot from Sheffield - both socially and economically to the extent that farmers could no longer get supplies economically or sell produce.

Wilmot sank to such a low point that farmers were unable to exist and many abandoned their farms or sold them off for very little. In the 1970's forestry companies bought over 50 farms and planted plantation trees.

The effect of this was that Wilmot lost most of it's population and the school went from approximately 150 students down to about 20, and shops, service stations and other businesses closed.

A sub committee of the Wilmot Tourist and Progress Association has been formed to created an event to commemorate the achievements of Gustav and Kate Weindorfer who worked tirelessly to get recognition for the Cradle Mountain area paving the way for it to become the UNESCO World Heritage Area that it is today.

Wilmot played an important role in the early days of Cradle Mountain and has a strong historic link with it being the closest town to the mountain.

Gustav Weindorfer has been remembered in possibly the longest running memorial service of any contemporary Australian, until 2017 when the aging committee that ran the memorial service at his graveside at Cradle Mountain did their final service.

It is our intention to continue this important tradition for the future and to give Gustav the recognition that he deserves for having the foresight and single mindedness to endure the hardships of life at Cradle Mountain to achieve his target of gaining National Park status to this important area of natural beauty.

Cradle Mountain World Heritage Area is now one of the most visited parts of Tasmania, but very few know of the man who spent his life getting it recognised.

So, in an effort to breathe some life back into the lovely community of Wilmot and to continue a great tradition we are seeking support to make it happen. The event is to be held on 5th May 2019 which is the anniversary of Gustav's passing in 1932.

We are seeking support immediately to get the ball rolling.

There are many costs involved in putting on such an event and we are hoping to raise some funds ourselves with a full guided bus trip to Cradle Mountain before the days events which include the memorial service, guest speakers, static displays of vehicles relevant to the opening up of the Cradle Mountain area, food vans and book signings.

We would prefer that you could join us on the bus trip to raise funds to put this event on, but if that is not a possibility then a monetary donation would be hugely appreciated.
