Building Resiliency in Dominica

Donation protected
Hurricane Maria devastated Dominica with 160-mile-per-hour winds, damaging and destroying an estimated 90% of all the buildings on the island. Maria’s rains led to landslides which washed away bridges and damaged key roads.

Dominica was known as the breadbasket of the Caribbean for its exports of guavas, mangoes, bananas, and citrus. Today, the aftermath of Maria is still visible and has completely changed the landscape.

Our goal is to set up a Mesh network and solar panels to allow communications for communities still lacking electricity. It functions as an off grid system comprised of multiple connection points (Nodes) that will allow the people of Dominica to stay connected. The mesh network will aid in keeping communications active between residents and it is a self healing network, meaning if one node goes down, the network will repair itself. It allows people to communicate with each other even without electricity or when phone lines and internet are down. In the event of another big storm or natural disaster the mesh network will be critical in connecting family members both near/far as well as a means to reach out for help from first responders.

We will be assisting in building resilient homes as well. Repairing houses and roofs that were destroyed by the storm and building them to a higher standard of resiliency and efficiency. The resilient homes will provide housing for displaced people and help in protecting those individuals from the elements. These homes will be able to withstand 160 mph winds* as well as withstand future disasters and diminish the extent of destruction due to design and specific building techniques. We will also provide solar panels for houses and schools where electricity has not been restored yet.

To achieve these goals, we definitely need your assistance. Naturally, we're writing grants, giving speeches, telling our story. Right now, though, we're spreading the word to friends and family, as widely as possible, to get this project launched.

Please take a minute to do 3 things:
1. Donate whatever you can afford
2. Leave us a comment.
