Pregnant Wife Whose Husband is Missing at Sea Shares His Heartbreaking Last Message to Her..

The last time Katie Griffin heard from her husband Keith was Wednesday evening. Speaking to his pregnant wife, Keith confided that he was worried he wouldn’t get much sleep because of the stormy weather. Then he told her he loved her. In the days since, those words have taken on a heartbreaking significance.

As the Daily Mail reports, Keith Griffin was one of 33 crew members of the El Faro, a cargo ship last seen near the Bahamas before the ship was overtaken by Hurricane Joaquin. On Thursday, the El Faro reported losing power and taking on water. Shortly thereafter, all communications with the El Faro were lost. In the days since, relatives of the missing crew have held their breath as the Coast Guard and Navy search for survivors.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the El Faro had sunk, though rescue efforts continue.

“If the vessel did sink on Thursday and that crew was able to abandon ship, they would have been abandoning ship in a category 4 hurricane,” said Coast Guard Captain Mark Fedor. “So you’re talking up to 140 mile per hour winds, seas upwards of 50 feet, visibility basically at zero. Those are challenging conditions to survive.”

That news came as a terrible blow to Katie, though she is still praying for a miracle.

“I’m pregnant with twins – I’m devastated,” she told the Boston Herald.

Keith and Katie began dating in 2008 and got married only two years ago.

“He was such a good guy, he had such a big heart,” Katie told the Boston Globe. “Just not being able to talk to him — and the thought of never being able to talk to him — it breaks me up. It crushes me.”

Keith was due home in mid-October, and Katie was eagerly awaiting his return. Not only were they planning to work on the nursery together, but at her next doctor’s appointment, the couple was going to learn the gender of the twins

Keith served as First Engineer on the El Faro, and Katie bitterly reflected on the fact that she had never worried about his safety at sea. Keith traveled the world in a historically dangerous job, but Katie was always more concerned about his airplane flights than his journeys on the open ocean. She says this ordeal has changed her perspective.

“You can have all the training in the world,” said Katie. “But you have a ship dead in the water and Mother Nature, you can’t really go up against it.”
While the search for the crew of El Faro will continue, Katie admits that it’s hard to hold on to hope.

“My babies are all I have left of him now,” she said sorrowfully.
