for Grand Traverse Mens Shed
Grand Traverse Men's Shed is a 501(c)3 non profit.
Focusing on senior men, retirees, widowers. Men have particular needs and ways of doing things. They like to be productive and to contribute to those around them but they still like to talk and often, to be doing something at the same time.
The Shed is a space for talk and fun. Practical skills and knowledge can be exchanged. Something useful can be going on that will contribute to a local community need, while the participants of the Shed experience an improvement in their own wellbeing by keeping physically, mentally and socially active. There are benefits all round.

Men’s Sheds are open to all men regardless of age, background or ability. It is a place where you can share your skills and knowledge with others, learn new skills and develop new friendships. New members are always welcome and can be assured that there is something of interest for everyone, as the men have ownership of the projects and decide their own program of events.

Senior men are more likely to be unemployed and isolated than women; they have poorer health
outcomes and are more likely to die from suicide and other preventable causes. They are less likely to talk about their problems or seek help and yet most services are not male friendly. Most men have learned from our culture that they don’t talk about feelings and emotions. There has been little encouragement for men to take an interest in their own health and wellbeing

The first Men’s Shed was formed in Australia 20 years ago.  That  first initiative has morphed into some 2000 Men’s Sheds worldwide.

The US Men’s Shed Association is the new kid on the block, having formed just last year.  We now have a Men’s Shed in Hawaii, Minnesota and Michigan and our goal is to help 200 more Men’s Sheds get started in the US within the next five years.

So why are Men’s Sheds so popular?  Because men, once they turn a certain age, retire and lose contacts, often become inactive, lonely, isolated, depressed and experience declining health.

Men’s Sheds offer a place with tools and a pot of coffee, where older guys can get together, work on projects, talk together and in the process make friends.  It’s a fun, friendly and interesting place to be.    Because men don’t talk face to face, they talk Shoulder to Shoulder, we’ve made that the Men’s Shed motto.

Your donation will allow us to renovate a shed, purchase tools and materials so our guys can work on projects that will benefit the community, other non profits.

The Grand Traverse Men's Shed is ready to move forward June 2017 with an aggressive recruiting campaign with press releases, direct mailing, support from origanizations and service clubs.

When you awake in the morning wouldn't you like someplace to go, something to do and someone to talk to?

We ask you for your financial help. If you know of an available shed for our use, please let us know. For more information please reply.
