On Friday August 25 Blaine was admitted to local hospital with bilateral pneumonia. He subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest and has remained on a ventilator in ICU. While his prognosis has improved, he is critically ill. Blaine and his wife KeriAnn are devoted parents to 6 beautiful children. Blaine has been an amazing servant to our community as a firefighter at Unit 7 in Odenton, MD. As an ER Tech at a local hospital, Blaine has impacted countless members of our community with his skill, compassion and immeasurable sense of duty. Blaine is a cherished member of his ER family. His humor, his friendship and his brotherhood have carried many through the darkest, most difficult situations. As newlyweds in 2016, Blaine's wife KeriAnn was faced with a cancer diagnosis. As no surprise to anyone that knows and loves them, they stood together as a family and miraculously survived what could have been completely devastating. Throughout KeriAnn's treatment Blaine never left her side. From the moment that KeriAnn received the call about Blaine's cardiac arrest she has not left his. This page has been set up to help offset the expenses for this amazing family.
Day 20: Hello everyone....we have appreciated and loved all the wonderful support from our extended ED and First Responder families and the amazing love shown to our family. I personally can say with out the help of my mother Mary Ann and my mother-in-law Brenda I certainly would not have been able to concentrate so much time and energy on Blaine if I also had to handle all 6 of our kids at the same time! They have truly been my lifesavers on the home front for me....Blaine and I both love you guys for everything, thank you.
Yes, Blaine is home and I am extremely happy about that because he's alive!! It also saves me from driving everyday after work up to Baltimore 5 days a week and then spending the weekends up there.....selfish I know but I don't care. At this time all of his treatments and there will be many of them will be on an outpatient basis. Dialysis 3 times a week (temporarily) for an undisclosed amount of time right now. Physical Therapy multiple times a week along with Speech Therapy. He may be home but he is in for a very long recovery road.
I appreciate those of you who have reached out to him by calling his cell phone or sending him a text. I would like you to know that he is not ignoring your kind words it is just going to take time for him to get use to things he use to use all the time....it's a process....a long process but he is making great strides everyday in the right direction. He's still trying to work on his speech which is still a struggle for him but he getting their day-by-day.
He really wants to see everyone and speak to everyone to personally thank you all for everything you have done for his family throughout this life hurdle he just needs a little more time!!
Again thank you everyone for everything that you ALL have done for me and my family it's genuinely appreciated!!

Day 15 - Blaine is doing better and better everyday. Yesterday he walked the halls on his unit himself. Last night Blaine had a tunnel cath placed for his continued dialysis when he leaves here. The feeding tube was removed last night and he ate some chicken noodle soup and drank ginger ale all on his own!!
Blaine will finally be leaving here sometime on Monday and transferred to a rehab facility! The staff here anticipates him only having to go to rehab for 10 - 14 days and then finally home. He will continue dialysis for 6 to 8 weeks 2 to 3 times a week until his kidneys are completely healed!
I was in contact with many friends throughout last night that attended the El Jefe fundraiser for our family. I showed the video to Blaine that Justin Davis posted on FB and it literally brought tears to Blaine's eyes. He said to me, "we have such wonderful friends"...he took the words right out of my mouth!!
You all have been so amazing throughout the crazy roller coaster and for that we sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! You all have shown us what extended family is all about and we are so extremely proud to be apart of it!
The Slacum Family
Day 8 - I would first like to truly thank, Brittany, Brandon and Diane for being my eyes and ears for the last 32 hours while away from Blaines bedside taking care of our kids!! If it weren't for them I would not have been able to watch our daughter in her very 1st HS Volleyball match....way to go Madison I know she was playing in honor of him out on that court for all the times he practiced with her out in our backyard before try-outs!! I was also able to attend our sons football game today in Cambridge a sport Blaine loves watching him play.
He finally is sleeping soundly which I hope he continues to do throughout the night. I sit here next to him looking at his face and being so blessed and thankful that he's breathing on his own without tubes coming out of every orfice like they were 2-1/2 days ago! I know all of you prayed for him as I did every second of all 6 long days he was intubated! I truly can't thank you all enough of all the love and support you have showen my family
Please continue the prayers for Blaine as this is going to be a long extensive road of recovery for him. Our family would not be whole right now if it wasn't for all of you and for that I am extremely greatful, proud and honored to call all of you FAMILY!!
Day 6 - Today was an extremely successful day. Thanks to Blaine's nurse Leah who had goals for him today and succeeded!!
At approximately 5:40 pm today Blaine was extubated from his breathing tube. If I wasn't holding his hand throughout the entire event I would have recorded it because it had to be one of the funniest damn extubation I have ever witnessed!!!
Blaine is talking in a drunken slurred state which is to be expected!! I want to thank everyone sincerely from the deepest bottom of my heart for all the support these past 6 excruciating days of my life!!
Blaine is awake and speaking like he's had 20 tequilas and cracking everyone up! He's got a long road ahead of him but the biggest hurdle has been already accomplished!
I will continue to keep you posted on Blaine's progress throughout this continued journey!!
Love you all!!
