I'm a Lithuanian-American writer , currently living outside Chicago. I recently learned by social media that my favorite painter, Šarūnas Sauka , is having a show of over 100 of his works in the National Gallery in Vilnius , Lithuania.
My first impulse was to get on the next flight to Vilnius and write an article about Sauka, pitch it to magazines in the English-speaking world. In my opinion, Sauka is the world's greatest living painter. However, he works in relative obscurity, poorly known even in his home country or among Lithuanians abroad.
I suppose I identify with his obscurity. I certainly identify with the isolation and angst he expresses, also the sensitivity and compassion, the deep longing for intercourse and true intimacy . When people hear of Lithuania, they think basketball or the Holocaust, perhaps about the 1991 revolution, but they don't necessarily think "great art". The truth is that there are really brilliant people working there, and they deserve to be known. Sauka's high on that list.
I want to see the exhibition and write an article, share it with the largest possible audience. But I'm a dad and husband, essentially the sole bread-winner in my family. It's embarrassing, but I don't have the money to buy a plane ticket, and I won't be able to set the necessary amount aside before the exhibition ends in March.
Obviously, there are people in the world with actual problems. If you're in the giving mood, you should help someone who's suffering before you help me. However, if I were able to collect the money for a plane ticket, I'd do everything I could to share my experience, and to promote a story about a dedicated, intense and very important artist.
