Govt shutdown- Student DC trip

Donation protected
I am taking 8 HS Student Council members to the LEAD student leadership conference in Washington, DC Jan. 24-28.  Our program has earned both Oklahoma State and National Gold Chapter of Excellence Awards for the past 10 years, working on numerous school and community projects. This past holiday season, they hand-made 500 toys for the students at a low-income Elementary here in Tulsa. Although the conference begins this Friday evening, we are going on Wednesday because most  of these  students have not been before and are excited about seeing everything. They have been working hard to earn the money for their air fare and hotel costs. The plan was to spend some time seeing the monuments, go the Smithsonian Air and Space, Natural History, and American History Museums, and have a tour of the Capitol with by our senator’s staff. Now, due to the Federal Government shutdown, the Smithsonians will be closed and we cannot go into the Federal buildings. While we will be able to walk around the National Mall, we need to change our itinerary and possibly go to Newseum and the Spy Museum, but these places cost money the kids don’t have. The International Spy Museum would cost $29.95/person for a total of $269.55 and the Newseum costs a total of  $129.95 for advance discount tickets. We could also go to Mt. Vernon for $20 each. We realize this is extremely short notice, but did not anticipate being shut out of the Smithsonians and not getting a tour of the Senate. I now need to fill these days with activities that will help make the trip unforgettable for my students.
If the Senate reaches an agreement and we are able to follow our original itinerary, this money will be saved to help offset costs for this same trip next year.
