It Takes a Village to Fight Child Abuse & Bullying

Tax deductible
Statistics confirm that child abuse is a global epidemic. Right here in the United States, threats to our children are far too common. Whether it is bullying, human trafficking, social media threats, physical, sexual, or emotional harm; our children are exposed to a multitude of dangers. Further compounding these tragedies is the silent suffering of victims. However, significant progress is being made. Countless individuals and organizations are working tirelessly to protect and give a voice to every child.

Good Secrets and Bad Secrets, a Michigan-based 501(c)3 organization, provides programs to schools and faith-based organizations to help empower our children at the time when they need it the most. The Libby the Lizard Child Safety Program (LLCSP), by Good Secrets and Bad Secrets, provides K-2nd grade safety knowledge and skills. The program also has reading and social studies content, which helps students prepare for the MSTEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress).

We need you to support bringing this program to the 175 children at Pasteur Elementary School.  Our funding goal is $31,000 to deliver a seven-week program filled with learning and fun for children, families, educators, and the entire community! Your donation is tax deductible, so, let’s work together to protect children!

Who We Are

Good Secrets and Bad Secrets (GSBS) was established in 2015 by author Toni McMorris and Dr. Larry Mathews, a veteran officer of the United States Army.  As survivors of childhood abuse and betrayal, they both understand the value in protecting children. The Good Secrets and Bad Secrets Mission

Our mission is to leverage the Libby brand and curriculum to improve awareness, prevention, and intervention of child abuse and bullying.  As indicated by the alarming statistics, there is a need to share behavioral expectations with children and the adults who care for them. The Libby program helps integrate these expectations into the culture of schools and neighborhoods. LLCSP enhances knowledge and skills for safe behaviors for kindergarten through 2nd grade.

How the Program Works

After a school, faith-based, or community organization decides to implement LLCSP, our trainers work with K-2nd grade staff to integrate Libby safety content into their classrooms.  The centerpiece of the curriculum is our book, Good Secrets & Bad Secrets with Libby the Lizard .  Parents play a major role in the safety of their children. Their participation is key, therefore, they are invited to attend a program preview event with school teachers, school leadership, and Good Secrets and Bad Secrets staff to become a part of this exciting education and safety initiative for their children.
The program includes pre and post testing to measure children's achievement and further improve program content.

Program Benefits and Outcomes

The Libby program is evaluated by an independent university professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Addiction Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy. Both the formal evaluation and teacher, parent, professional , and administrator testimonials show increases in child literacy, student attendance, and parental engagement. Post testing indicates high levels of learning retention and enthusiasm.

One of the most important outcomes is that children have an opportunity to learn and practice effectively communicating their safety concerns with adults.  If they encounter an actual threat, they are better prepared to use skills learned the the LLCSP.

Your Support is Needed

Pasteur Elementary School, in Northwest Detroit, has requested the Libby the Lizard Child Safety Program. The school has 175 K-2 students who will participate in the 7-week program in the Spring of 2019. Students will experience 20-24 hours of classroom learning and participate in 2 after-school events. Children also receive a copy of the Good Secrets and Bad Secrets book, Team Libby shirts, and supplemental materials.

The cost to participate in the program is $175 per student, only $7.92 per hour per child. The total cost of the seven-week program at Pasteur is $31,000. Any funding that exceeds our goal will be used to deliver programs to Detroit's Schulze Elementary School in Detroit, which has 341 K-2nd graders and to publish the second book featuring Libby, “If People Were Crayons.” This book will help our children to embrace, respect, and celebrate diverse individuals and communities.  Your generous donations will provide an opportunity to deliver the program throughout elementary schools in Detroit and subsequently other Michigan communities.

Yes, it takes a village to raise a child and it also takes that same village to also protect them! Thank you for your support and for becoming a new member of Libby the Lizard’s Child Safety Village.
