Golden Apple Artist Residency

My name is Rick Beerhorst and I live in Grand Rapids Michigan. For the past 24 years, I have been balancing being a homeschooling parent with my wife Brenda and six children (four still at home), and working as full time painter. Living in both of these spheres has made my life very rich and it has sometimes been exasperating! I've always wondered what it would be like to go off for an artist residency. My chance has now come, as I have recently been selected to participate in the Golden Apple Artist Residency, in Downeast, Maine. This residency, lasting two weeks in August, will give me the rare opportunity to focus on making art without interuption - in a beautiful environment, in the company of other working artists.
An artist residency takes an artist out of their familar surroundings  - giving them both privacy to do their work as well as opportunity to connect with other art professionals. It is this unique context that an artist often makes new discoveries and break-throughs in their work.
When I first recieved the letter informing me that I had been selected for the Golden Apple Artist Residency - I began to add up what the actual cost would be -- it just seemed totally beyond my means.
$1,900.00                    cost of the residency
$400.00                        air fare
$500.00                        art materials

$2,800.00                     total cost

As I continued to think about it, I realized I really wanted to go, and I needed to find a way to make it work. This is when I turned to gofundme. I am inviting you to partner with me by making a donation, so that this dream of going to my first artist residency may become a reality.

As I come to the end of my first week of my residency I would be hard pressed to remember at time in my 25 year career when I have been more productive. Making paintings here is like rolling a barrel down a hill. Being here makes me think of the time I saw U2 during their first US tour with about 100 people in the audience. I had never danced before in public but that night I danced as if it was beyond my choice. This environment is nothing short of magical. I'm so grateful to be here.

I am now in my third day of my two week Golden Apple artist residency. I am so grateful to be here. I am staying in the upper floor of a cozy little two story cottage that looks out on bay of the Atlantic Ocean. Every morning and afternoon the lobster boats are out there doing there thing.
I also have a very nice studio to work in which is private but in the same building as the other three studios so there is ample opportunity for us to be with each other especially at meal times. Speaking of meals (the food is all very delicious, healthy and local.) in the evening we all join our hosts Greg and Shelly and share a fancy meal together which always includes plenty of wine and dessert. These dinners last a couple hours as they are full of great conversations.
This is the first artist residency I have ever done. I took time to watch the video Pearl and I made this winter twice. In it I said that artist residences "are a rarefied opportunity of being allowed to focus on your work than the company of highly motivated artists which make it more likely that you will make break throughs, stumble into things you may have never done before." I don't want to get ahead of my self since it's only been a few days but I already have seven paintings in progress of medium size which is a kind of productivity that in thirty years of art makin I have never experienced before. Also the ideas being shared between myself and the other artists as we are getting have my wheels really turning.
I am so very thankful for each one of you that contributed your hard earned money so that I could be right now. The knowledge that I am here not on my own dime is both humbling and very, sry motivating.
This is what the shoreline looked like early this morning low tide.

I must say how thankful I am to all of you who pitched in to the Golden Apple Artist Residency gofundme campaign. We were fully funded in four days and then went $980 over our goal. To have the financing for a project is terrific but what is so meaningful to any artist is the affirmation of a community. This is a resounding Yes! Continue your work. Follow your muse like your life depends on it because it does.

The video I share with you in this update was made by my daughter Pearl who is also the subject of not only a new series of paintings but a new approach to painting. I am looking forward to continuing to follow this new approach through the Spring and Summer including my time at the Golden Apple Residency.

I thank you for your generous gifts and thank you also to those who shared the campaign on social media because that opened doors that I could not open on my own.

Yours, Rick Beerhorst

“I think the benefits of residency programs are enormous for artists. On a very basic level, it gives an artist time to work and space to work, away from their normal lives. The second part of the equation is that residencies place artists in new communal contexts with new peers and mentors from all over the world. I think that all of these factors create an environment where artists can make substantial jumps in their work in a short amount of time. I say that as an artist and as a former dean of a residency program. I’ve both received the benefit of residencies and watched hundreds of other artists benefit from them." -Craig Drennen, Assistant Professor, Georgia State University; former Dean, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine:
