The Bratt Godwin Cemetery is the final resting place for many of our beloved friends and family members. Here's a little history about the cemetery in case you didn't know.
"Before 1900, William Godwin's large farm was established at the northwest corner of the crossroads. The Godwin family is one of the founding families at Bratt, property deeds show this family selling land here in 1880. William's home was near the center of their property and would have faced today's Hwy 4. The western edge of the farm was bordered by the old Pine Barren Road and a cemetery. The founders of the graveyard are not now known, the earliest graves are those of the Merritt family with the oldest being Benjamin Merritt who died March 17, 1877. This was an active community cemetery well before 1900 and gravestones here recall several of the area's old families, such as that of David Holland who was born in 1796 and died here in 1891. The graveyard today is still a very active burial site. It is known by several names: the Bratt Cemetery, or Godwin Cemetery, or sometimes Bratt's Godwin Cemetery." Many of us received mailings about the need for funds to continue the upkeep of the cemetery. The next time you are there, look around and appreciate the grass being trimmed, roads maintained and trash picked up. If we don't support them, these tasks may fall to the people who visit instead of that time being spent visiting with family. Please consider giving. Once the goal is met, all proceeds, minus the fees GoFundMe charges, will be presented to the Bratt Godwin Cemetery.
