Annette's Education Campaign

$765 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 13 people in 36 months

The goal of the fund is to raise money to pay for my continuing education so that I may better serve my students in the Bronx at ICS and high school music programs in the Bronx. I have taught countless students in underserved schools, often under very restrictive budgets. I have developed drum clubs for my students to learn percussion after school.  It allows me to give them more individualized instruction and attention. I have  also coached students one on one and have helped two of my students get into the competitive Jazz at Lincoln Center program (now also running in the Bronx). There is a need and desire for students to learn and become proficient on different instruments and in different ensemble settings. I want to invite fellow musicians to visit and assist in different scenarios. This will supplement and enrich the learning experience and ultimately the quality of life of my students but I can't do it without funding. This funding is important not only to help cover the cost of my continuing education, but also to help build a fund that will facilitate  my work despite the budget restrictions that my schools are facing.

Gregory Sanchez has been a student of mine since kindergarten, now going into the 8th grade. He is an honor student and has been playing clarinet since the 3rd grade. I also taught both of his older sisters. Emily Sanchez graduated in 2014, also an honor student and has shown a long interest in music. Both of their parents are from Central America and both work full time jobs and all of their children have been on the honor role. Being involved in music has been a great motivator and source of joy for these kids. Being able to play a positive role in my students’ lives and helping them grow musically has always been very important.

When Jazz at Lincoln Center opened its middle school jazz program in the Bronx, I knew Gregory needed to get in & experience it. He would be able to have a more intensive experience and meet other students within his age group. I brought it to the attention of his parents and they got on board. We worked hard to get all of the paperwork and phone calls in. All of this was "teaching off the clock" but long story short, he got in! The site in the Bronx is going on its second year and Gregory was part of the first group to be in the program.
