Help us “Glo” to the Academy Awards!

The Short Story:
Our small Mississippi startup company, Glo ™, has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime, and we could really use your help! We were asked to attend a celebrity gift suite at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on February 25th. At the event, Glo will be featured in front of more than 100 celebrities, models, actors, singers, and more. This event could prove to be a very pivotal moment for our startup and launch us onward to success! Because this was an unexpected opportunity, we need your help with the high travel expenses to California. This is not only a key moment in our startup’s future, but we believe an amazing moment to show the world that Mississippi’s so much more than our reputation!

Our Story:
Hi! My name is Kaylie Mitchell. Together a college friend, Hagan Walker, and I developed this small little cube we like to call Glo . The very humble beginnings of our startup began in a graphic design classroom at Mississippi State University where I was diligently working on branding a hypothetical company that would eventually transform into the very real startup company we’re currently building.

I wanted to develop a beautiful and engaging beverage light that would activate when placed in water. But I’m no electrical engineer and had no idea how to make this product come to life. And then like an answer to my confused prayers, in comes Hagan Walker, an electrical engineering student at MSU and just the right guy for the job. After many sleepless nights working endlessly on the design, manufacturing, marketing, and engineering of this tiny little invention, we finally created Glo – the first liquid-activated beverage experience!

You simply drop a Glo unit into any liquid and it immediately lights up, cycling through nine different colors of light. You may have seen Glo on Tipsy Bartender , Viral Thread , and UNILAD . It looks amazing and literally can transform a party or event! When you remove Glo from liquid, it immediately turns off, saving battery life for your next light show. Want to use it again? Just pop it in another beverage, bathtub, pool, or any liquid of your choice!

The very first prototype was made using a melted toothbrush travel case with some hand soldered electronics inside. We dropped it in a glass of water, and BAM, let there be light! We were so excited about this breakthrough we decided to patent it. Little did we know we were on the cusp of a wild and exciting ride through the startup world. We have come a long way from melted toothbrush cases and making these in a bedroom. We now have an office in Starkville, MS and we have even shipped early orders to over 32 countries!

Two years and lots of lessons later, I’m here to tell you that we have learned so much about business, work ethic, determination, and most importantly, people. Without the immense support we have received from the great state of Mississippi, the city of Starkville, Mississippi State University, the MSU Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach and countless friends, family and strangers who have believed in us from the very beginning, I can assure you we would have never made it this far.

I know what you’re thinking – why does a business need a contribution? While we have reached many great milestones for such a small and young company, we still would argue that we have a long way to go to be a Mississippi homerun. Hagan and I are fresh out of college and have taken a leap of faith by pursuing Glo as our full-time jobs. Every cent counts. Being invited to the Academy Awards is an incredible opportunity for Glo to expand and grow. And it’s also a chance for a small company from Mississippi to make a big splash and represent Mississippi and it’s great startup community! Any donation counts and we are so humbly grateful for the support!

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU. We are so fortunate to have so many wonderful people supporting us and pushing us onward and upward! We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you.

We are spending the week hard at work getting prepared for the event this weekend! Lots of packing, counting, recounting, decorating, and conference calls. We have some very exciting meetings lined up for our time in L.A. and we can't wait to keep everyone updated through Facebook and Instagram. Feel free to add or follow Hagan Walker (insta: haganwalker) and I (insta: mitchellkaylie) as well as Glo (@glodrinks) as I'm sure we'll all be updating constantly :)

Thanks again for making the opportunity possible. We are so incredibly excited to represent Mississippi and we really hope to make everyone proud!

Best,

Kaylie Mitchell
