Global Service-Learning in Jamaica

Donation protected
Hello everyone!

My name is Niyah Pope and I am a senior at Slippery Rock University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. In addition to my full-time class schedule, I am an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, a peer-mentor, and the parliamentarian for the Black Action Society. Recently, I was selected to participate in the Global Service-Learning (GS-L) program this upcoming winter break .

The GS-L program believes in engaging students in meaningful service-learning experiences, that builds a sense of civic identity and leadership which will benefit both students and the communities with whom they will encounter not only during the trip, but with over the course of their life-time as citizens. GS-L partners with the Amizade program, who works with 75 universities all over the world, creating many life-changing experiences through service and learning.  Participants have been granted the opportunity to travel to Petersfield, Jamaica from January 3-13, 2019. Participants will fully emerge themselves in the culture and connect with the people and issues of Jamaica. In this rural area of Jamaica, students will be able to engage in hands-on service opportunities through construction and maintenance, teaching in schools, architectural design, running a camp, and much more!

As an education major, I am  looking forward to learning more about their education system, teaching and working with their educators and students. In addition to that, I am excited about providing service; I have always wanted to take my involvement and commitment to community service to the next level since joining my sorority, considering the fact that service is one of our principles. I believe attending  this is a great start to exemplifying my dedication towards service to both my major and sorority.

I am aiming to raise $2,500 .00 which will cover the cost of the trip. I first heard about this opportunity my freshman year, but was afraid to participate because none of my friends were going. Three years later, and none of friends have applied to participate, however I refuse to let that stop me this time around. And so, now I am faced with my next challenge; paying for the trip. With any donation of your choice, you can help me travel to Jamaica and engage in this amazing community service-learning experience.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask!

Thank you!
