Help Me Give my Kidney to my Wife

HELP ME GIVE ONE OF MY KIDNEYS TO MY WIFE, IRENE ROPER

On September 29, 2017, my wife, Irene Roper died for eight minutes while at the Memorial Pembroke Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, being treated for complications with her heart and diabetic condition. However, people were praying and God was listening. She made it.

By the next April, she was back in the classroom teaching, but could no longer manage the job.

You would love Irene. She’s one of the kindest people you could meet—giving without counting the cost, even to others who have hurt her. She cooks more than the two of us need and feeds all kinds of people routinely.  Also, she is a super-teacher who has taught for 34 years, starting at Titchfield High School in Jamaica and most recently at Florida Career College. And her students simply love her.

Today, Irene is back in jeopardy as both her kidneys have shut down.

The Crazy Back Story

For years, Irene had lived with diabetes and managed okay. We gave her the best doctors and medicines our money could buy, but based on my research, I suspect that the combined effects of the medicines compromised her kidneys.

I am married to this wonder woman, but I don’t know how she does it. For the past _____ months, she has been going to the hospital and getting dialysis, every single week, three times a week. To clean her blood and do the work the kidneys should do, they poke needles into her body and connect her to all kinds of tubes. I still don’t know how she remains so cheerful and hopeful.

After several months on the hospital donor list, the odds of getting a kidney felt no better than winning a million-dollar lottery. But this is my wife we’re talking about here; I can’t play those odds. Even family members went to get tested for compatibility. No luck.

Then Something Amazing Happened

I’m not her blood relative and so as a spouse, it hardly makes sense for me to bother doing the test, but I do. And I am a match! What are the odds? I am going to give Irene one of my kidneys.

To tell you truth, there are times when I am really scared of cutting out one of my kidneys. But I figure, I have already given her all my heart and I only have one of those, so what’s a kidney for someone I love so much and desperately want in my life?

Then the Money Ran Out . . .

Medical bills have wiped us out. And with Irene sick, we are down to one income. Sadly, her last school kept her as a contractor, so no benefits, 401k or insurance from the job. And our private insurance that we squeezed to pay every month has let us down; it makes no sense, but that’s another story.

Your Help Could Give her Life

Despite my best intention to give Irene my kidney, she could still die—God forbid—unless we can afford the $61,000 for hospital bills and medical expenses. We now have a slot at the hospital, but will need the funds by March 28, 2019.

By the way, I figure that it is only because you are a kindhearted person, eager to help make a difference, that you have even read my letter down to this point. I am grateful and want to say a heart-felt thank you!

Any and all support is appreciated. Thank you so much for your generosity and compassion!
