Gift a life-changing surgery for Christmas!

Hello Friends,

It's the season for giving and I need your help.

As some of you may know, I've been spending a lot of time in Cambodia in the last couple of years and over that time I've made some very good friends. In the photo above is my friend Dieng with some of his family on the day he graduated from University.  Dieng comes from a small village about an hour and a half outside of Siem Reap. His family, although happy, are very poor and do not have access to basic medical supplies.

Dieng's father, Dorm,  needs our help. He is a humble and extremely hardworking man who would never ask for help himself, but in this instance, it is very important.

There are more details below, but here's the basic rundown:  Dorm has been unable to work and care for his family due to excruciating pain as a result of kidney stones.  He needs urgent surgery.  The surgery is impossibly expensive for them, but entirely achievable for us. You can help cover this cost so that this hardworking father can be pain free for Christmas. Please give what you can.

Now for those who want more details, here's the long version.

As a result of being unable to afford preventative medicine, Dieng's Father has developed extremely painful kidney stones that have basically crippled him. The pain is so extreme that he has been unable to walk, which of course means that he cannot work.  The doctor has said  that one of the stones is large enough to be blocking the urethra which makes urinating almost impossible and terribly painful.  When kidney stones get to this stage, it is difficult to find any relief.

There are two possible courses of action that the doctor will decide between based on scans taken this past week.  The first option is Lipotripsy. This is basically using shockwaves to break the stones in the kidney into much smaller pieces so that they can be passed naturally. This is a much less invasive option, but can have complications, and passing the stones afterwards still causes enormous amounts of pain.

If the stones are too large or calcified to be broken down,  the second option is an operation. (Percutaneous nephrolithotomy.) Essentially, the stones are removed using  telescopic instruments via a small incision in the back. This gives instant relief but requires a few days of recovery in hospital.  This is the preferred option, but takes the costs to the higher end of the scale.

The doctors want him to be treated within the next week and have indicated that the procedures will cost between $1200 and $2000 USD. That's equivalent to about 10 months wages for an educated, full time Cambodian worker. Obviously, that sort of money can be financially crippling.

So, this Christmas, if you want to spread some cheer and have goodwill toward all men, please consider giving whatever you can to help a good man have a pain-free Christmas and get back to being able to provide for his family.

I will bring updates on his progress as soon as I get them.

Please note. If you want to be more generous and go over and above the target, there are numerous other people and projects in Cambodia that need our help! I promise that all money raised will go to improving the lives of people who desperately need assistance.

In that instance, the excess will first go toward any unexpected medical costs and follow up appointments for Dorm. If there is any money left over after that, the cost will go toward english lessons for young Cambodians so that they have a higher chance of gaining well paid employment and to assist young families who are doing it tough.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You are literally changing lives with your generosity.
