Basil is a 4 month-old kitten whose eyelids never fully developed in utero. Because she doesn't have eyelids, a condition called agenesis, the hair around her eyes grows directly into her corneas, causing extreme discomfort and blood vessel ingrowth.
We adopted Basil from Montgomery County Animal Shelter when she was 9-weeks old. She is a very loving and playful kitten, and we hate to see her in pain. We have been managing her condition with daily lubricating eye drops and by tweezing the hairs around her eyes, but this only provides temporary relief.
We consulted with a specialist, who recommended Basil undergo a cryotherapy procedure. This involves freezing the tissue around the eye, which should help prevent future hair growth. Sometimes more than one procedure is required to effectively prevent future hair growth.
We are starting this campaign in the hopes of raising money for Basil's surgery. The vet quoted $2361 for the first procedure, so we are hoping to raise $2700 to cover the initial surgery and the Gofundme fees (3% + $0.30/donation). While there is nothing we can do about some of her other eye issues which may lead to blindness, we want to do all we can to reduce her pain.
