More than 25 years ago, I attended Metser Primary School located in one of the marginalized regions in Southern Ethiopia.
Back then, the school was built from wood and mud. Kids were responsible for keeping the classrooms clean on daily basis. The rooms had no decent seats or tables. The wind was whirling through the many holes in the wall and the noise caused much distraction. During rainy seasons, the classrooms get cold as they had no heating or insulation. Sometimes, heavy rain hit right in. Library was non-existent.
Over 25 years later, having come from this school, I hold a PhD and I teach in a university in the UK. When I returned to the school in December 2019, things were
exactly the same for the most part. It was heartbreaking. These kids are ambitious just like I was. They are hungry for knowledge like I was. But ambition and hunger for education, without fair access to resources is nothing. I feel I need to do something and help, give back to the place where I started off.
By helping us construct one building of brick wall, with a few decent classrooms, with proper walls, windows, roof, and appliances, you will give hope and access to education to kids in Metser Primary School in Southern Ethiopia.
The project is run by Access in Focus(AiF), a charity association based in the UK founded by volunteers including myself from Ethiopia and my friends from Italy, Romania and Ukraine. Any donation you give will be listed on the website of AiF unless you do not give your consent for being listed. Those who donate a minimum of hundred 100 pounds will have their names inscribed on the brick wall of the classroom we are going to build and will have a photo sent to them with a photo of students who benefit from this project.
