Hidden Figures:The Next Generation

Hello Everyone!
"Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity. If you're prepared and the opportunity comes up, it's your good fortune to have been in the right place at the right time"---Katherine Johnson, NASA Scientist/ Mathematician—“Hidden Figures”

Thank you for visiting our page. This campaign was started to help two sisters, Yasmin and Kamala, raise funds to attend summer 2017 leadership and medical science programs at Princeton and Boston Universities respectively. Both sisters applied to Boston and Princeton Universities summer programs separately and each was selected to participate on her own merit for these competitive programs based on exceptional scholarship, teacher recommendations, personal essays and community service! Kamala and Yasmin are excited to be given the opportunity to attend these summer programs! Therefore, our family is raising funds for both girls' tuition fees (which cover room/board, supplies and program field trips, labs) and expenses to attend the programs in Massachusetts and New Jersey.
The two week Princeton University leadership program's goal is to cultivate and nurture leadership skills in young women of color to become change agents in their communities. Both girls are student leaders in their community and high school, including the National Honor Society and Student Council, and want to further grow and develop their leadership skills with like-minded young women at Princeton University.
Young women, particularly women of color, are underrepresented in math and the sciences. The one-week Boston University School of Medicine summer programs give students the opportunity to work in a medical lab with actual scientific tools and materials-- while challenging them to apply STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) principles to solve DNA-based and scientific medical queries.
The recent movie “Hidden Figures” inspired Kamala and Yasmin to pursue and apply for these unique summer program opportunities because like the women in the film, Kamala and Yasmin have always had a love of the sciences. Specifically, Yasmin, a talented chemistry student, has a goal of becoming a geneticist, and was accepted into the Boston University DNA sequencing program for high school students; while Kamala, who is taking courses above her grade level, is working towards her dream of becoming a doctor and was accepted into the Boston University Medical Research program for high school students.
Thank you for helping us start these young women on a path of leadership, medical and scientific scholarship.
