Girls' Education in Rural Morocco

Hi.

This is Imane. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

In 2012, I graduated from a Moroccan public high school with honors. At the time, I was admitted on a scholarship to African Leadership Academy, a world class boarding school in South Africa that aims to develop the next generation of African leaders. Upon my graduation from the academy, I was granted another scholarship to attend Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where I am currently a rising junior double majoring in global studies and French studies. I have received over $300 000 in scholarships thus far to make my education possible and I aspire to pay it forward every day.

My mother dropped out of middle school.
My grandmothers never attended school.
I am the product of invisible women.
Women who were denied an equal chance of education,
Women who were pushed into marriage at an early age,
And women who were forced into unhealthy lifestyles.
These are women who were born and raised in rural Morocco.
When you are raised by invisible women, you strive to be visible.
My story is my attempt at being visible and making other women visible.

Before starting my undergraduate studies, I took a gap year where I worked closely with high school students in Morocco to help them pursue their dream education. It was the most challenging yet the most rewarding experience of my life. There is something magical about witnessing someone's success. I enjoyed teaching and counseling my students, but what I enjoyed most was listening to them. I was inspired by who they are, and I aspired to help them grow confident in that. By the end of my gap year, many of my students made it to top notch universities abroad on full scholarships. I was delighted by their acceptances as much as I was humbled by their personal growth.

I was recently accepted to shadow the CEO of a renowned organization that offers quality summer learning programs in high-need communities, with the aim of narrowing the achievement gap in education. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. There is so much I can learn from the CEO's remarkable expertise in education that would deepen my understanding of the field. Most importantly, this opportunity would provide me with the necessary tools to start my own project which will ultimately benefit girls in rural Morocco. I am particularly interested in the organization's near-peer mentoring model. Through understanding the dynamics that make such model successful in high-need communities in New York city, I can develop a similar one that would be effective in terms of reducing the achievement gap between girls in rural Morocco and those in urban Morocco.

My internship lasts three months from June to August. All contributions will go to covering my housing, transportation, and living expenses in New York city. I ought to mention that the office is in Manhattan.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to read my story. I am grateful for your support of my personal and professional development as well as my vision for rural girls in Morocco.

Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to answer them.

Thank you,
Imane
