Girl Meets Cannes

Hi everyone! What a wonderful time to be alive!

The Story:

Let’s start from where everybody does. My name is Angelik Laboy and for the moment, I am a student. Of course, it depends on the time this is being asked because I could also be considered a technology enthusiast, a film director, editor, or simply a learner. I am a small town girl from Puerto Rico that had her beginnings from creating a combination of wearable technologies and medical devices. It became my passion to do innovate prototypes that allowed the improvement of my communities’ health such as stress, colorblindness, and diabetes. Curiously enough, a side of me was also compelled to partake on the creation of stories and their rhyme. Nonetheless, through directing/editing several student films, I found my other passion within filmmaking. That led to creating two film productions in my Island and co-founding Georgia Tech’s first film community (Filmmakers@GT); where I am currently studying computer science with a minor in film studies.

Here, alongside with my friends, we competed at Campus Movie Festival and for it, we had to make a movie in less than one week. After a lot of hard work, we were declared Jury Winners at our school and moved on to the national CMF festival, Terminus. However, we recently got selected as one of the Top 30 short films nationwide to screen at the Cannes Film Festival!

What this means:

CMF will bring our film into the Short Film Corner at Cannes and it would be made available to an audience of over 12,300 people from 120 countries. As the representative of our film, I would have all the access to the festival and be privileged enough to view the most prestigious and acclaimed films in the world. On top of that, I'll be able to network, walk the red carpet, and gain connections within the film industry.

It's a once in a lifetime opportunity; better try than nothing.

In terms of the program and the festival, it's a very costly trip. As a college student, I would be trying every possible outlet in order to get the help required for the trip. If you're willing and have read this far, I would appreciate any amount and would forever be in debt to all of those that help.

Now, why me?

I want to witness the origination of film history. I want to be able to expand my horizons beyond America. I want to be able to meet the world I would love to one day to be a part of.  In addition, I hope to gain perspective on the richness coming from other countries and be able to hear their hidden voices. As a Hispanic woman, getting opportunities like these are obscure and only the fortunate ones find them. This is my way to demonstrate to everybody that we can also make it!
