Girl Interrupted - The story of Chloe OBryan
It’s been a very difficult and challenging month for Chloe OBryan, a shy, charismatic, caring, beautiful, and adventurous 26-year-old, who, on the day before June 15, 2019, was living her American dream. You see, Chloe recently graduated from a prestigious college in the Philippines, married the man of her dreams, Derek, and embarked on a new life and adventure in the United States. Soon after, she endeavored to help create a future for her new family and secured a job with Costco Wholesale, where she managed to beat hundreds of well-qualified candidates to secure one of two top spots for this position within the company. She proudly became an income-earner and contributor to her newfound family and the American economy. Chloe, just several weeks back, found her second love, an eleven-week-old Golden retriever they named “Bailey”. It was fitting as Chloe, Derek, and Bailey all enjoy hiking and being together. What budding family doesn’t start out with a beautiful fur-baby to call their own? Everything was perfect in Chloe’s world.
Then came that dreaded day, Saturday, June 15th. At approximately 2am, it started out as an uncontrollable muscle spasm that woke Chloe up from her slumber, her husband fast asleep beside her. She woke him up, complaining of the spasms and the sheer pain of a severe and unrelenting headache. Doing what any normal couple would do, given the circumstances, Derek had Chloe drink some water, lay back down, and carefully watched over her. Suddenly, right before his very eyes, he notices Chloe’s eyes roll upward and she begins to seizure violently in their bed.
An emergency phone call is placed and Chloe is rushed to Valley Medical Hospital in Renton, Washington. A cat scan reveals that an immense amount of blood has formed inside Chloe’s brain, so much so that it hides the aneurysm lodged deep within her cerebellum and ready to explode. Doctors tell Derek the prospects for Chloe’s survival do not look good and that Chloe may not survive the night. The dreaded news no one ever wants to hear when their beloved lays helpless in a trauma operating room. At that moment, Derek is given a critical decision to make and one of the most hardest decisions of his life, to allow the doctors to perform a risky brain surgery at Valley Medical or to have Chloe whisked to Seattle’s top emergency trauma center, Harborview Medical Hospital. The “what ifs” plagued Derek’s thoughts, his beautiful world has suddenly come crashing down too, and after careful consideration and with only minutes to spare, he elects the latter.
At Harborview Medical Center, Chloe undergoes a new wave of examinations to save her life. Sadly, the aneurysm is not only lodged deep within her brain but near the sleep center. We all know brain surgery is one of the most difficult and riskiest of surgeries to perform. The odds are often stacked against the patient, the surgeons, and the medical staff. But on this day, all that is good was on Chloe’s side. The doctor’s remained steel-eyed, focused, and did not waver in their attempt to save Chloe’s life. They masterfully, meticulously, and intricately navigate through Chloe’s cerebellum to release the blood that was plaguing her, coil the aneurysm, and manage to save and stabilize her, pulling her from the grasp of no return. It was an evening of medical wonders and achievements for Chloe and the doctors, for in the minutes leading up to her operation, Chloe had sustained a stroke. Her chance at a life-saving surgery appeared bleak. In the span of minutes, Chloe’s already battered body was courageously hanging on for dear life as she carefully walked the proverbial picket fence between life and death. Chloe’s family and friends will attest that their unrelenting candle lit prayers, sent to the Heavens, have been heard and are joyous to learn that she is given another chance at life. The surgery was a success and Chloe pulled through, alive and breathing.
The road to recovery for Chloe OBryan is long and riddled with many obstacles. To this day, Chloe has undergone numerous surgeries and continues to suffer from ongoing fevers as her body attempts to repair itself. Every day remains a constant battle for Chloe to overcome this, even with the aid of some of Seattle’s finest medical professionals working hard to help her. Derek remains steadfast by her bedside, honoring his wedding vows of “through thick and thin”. We pray Chloe will survive this and know finances are one less worry she and Derek should have to worry about during this life-altering setback.
