Gideon's Medical Fund
Several years ago, five of the children were infected with Lyme's disease as a result of being bitten by deer ticks. As the disease has progressed, it has caused symptoms ranging from chronic seizures and headaches to constant physical pain and other neurological symptoms.
Early last week, the Ruhl's 12 year old son Gideon, began experiencing constant seizures. He became unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital. For several days, he remined unresponsive in the ICU. It was hard to see Gideon attached to so many wires, and tubes breathing for him and monitoring brain activity. The doctors were concerned that he had been unresponsive for so long, and warned Jobie and Anna to be prepared for the worst. Knowing the power of their God, the Ruhls prayed for a miracle.
By God's grace , Gideon has made huge strides! He is now awake, able to walk with some assistance, understand, and talk some. The road ahead will be long. There is speech therapy, physical therapy, and further treatment for Lyme.
Because of what happened to Gideon, the doctors are recommending more treatment for all five children infected with Lyme. Unfortunately, since there is so much that the medical community has yet to learn about Lyme, and treatments are varied, they are not covered by the Ruhl's insurance.

We know that Jesus Christ is powerful. His love and faithfulness are amazing. He has worked nothing less than a miracle in Gideon this far, and we are certain that further healing will come from His hand. Above all, Anna says, "The joy of the Lord is rich and deep. Pray that it will fill [the children's] hearts and lives. It will be a joy that has nothing to do with happy (or even healthy!) circumstances. It has to do with looking in the face of God and knowing He is all we'll ever need."
As Gideon continues to improve, it is very evident that his recovery is going to be a very long road. We are overwhelmed with thankfulness that he has been able to return to the point where he is functioning (able to move, talk, eat, walk, ride his bike, enjoy the outdoors, etc.). But we would like to update you so you can be praying for the challenges he faces and for wisdom as we try to determine what types of treatments will help him the most in the near future and long term. He is still not able to complete his school on his baseline level - he usually has to spend at least half the day lying in his bed to alleviate his headaches. He is also dealing with a lot of muscle soreness on a regular basis and his heart rate fluctuates dramatically throughout the day. He is having much difficulty with focus while reading or doing his schoolwork, and he has spells of dizziness.
The mitochondrial DNA testing came back and showed that there is nothing abnormal as far as they could tell. This is a relief because genetic disorders are not treatable.
He also had an MRI last Friday (Feb. 24), but we have not received the results yet. Jedaiah was also able to get an MRI to see if he is having any similar swelling in his brain.
Each of the five older children have had blood samples sent to IgenX labs to test for different infections they may have. Please pray that these tests will accurately indicate what is affecting each child (these tests were not covered by insurance and ran about $2,000 for each child). We have not received the results from this testing yet.
We have taken the four other children (not Gideon, as he was too unstable to travel that far) to see a Lyme specialist in Washington,DC, which has been very informative. The treatments they have prescribed are antibiotic treatments (which we were not real excited about) and are not covered by insurance. (The children have already undergone extensive antibiotics with another doctor from VA, but we still wanted a second opinion.) Since there is no way we could pay for the treatments (about $200,000), we are looking into other options. We are very thankful though that we were able to "get a foot in the door" there, and that they finally got to see an excellent infectious disease doctor that truly understands Lyme and co-infections.
As many of you know, we have been taking our children to a wonderful chiropractor, Dr. Seay, weekly since last spring. He has been very helpful with treatments for the children and we have seen improvements in their symptoms since going to him. It is a continued expense that we feel has been worth the cost.
We are now looking into a machine called the Ampcoil (ampcoil.com) which uses PEMF technology and sound vibrations to help your body on a cellular level. This would be a big investment, but if it is effective it could possibly reduce the daily need for many of the treatments we are currently using for the children (supplements, homeopathics, etc) which are also very expensive. We are trying to gain all the knowledge we can about it before we make a big purchase, so if you or anyone you know has knowledge of the Ampcoil or similar machines, please let us know your experience and any recommendations you may have.
Pray for us to have wisdom. We are believing and trusting the Lord to bring healing to all our children, and we have never felt as confident as now that He has a tremendous plan for each of our children! No devil or disease can stop that! We are so encouraged by Gideon's faith and all the children as they rally around him every day to pray for total healing, and ultimately, that God's love would spread to others and they would be saved.

After 50 days, Gideon was discharged from Vidant Medical Center today and came home to cheers and hugs. He was very happy to be able to come home! He still has a long recovery ahead, but he is in very high spirits and we know that God is restoring his health completely. He will be going to many follow-up appointments and he will have an MRI in a couple of months. He will have physical therapy in Cary on a regular basis. Jedaiah, Arrow, Hosanna, and Moses continue to experience many symptoms of Lyme Disease. Please pray for their healing and for wisdom for us in the best course to take for their treatments in the future (to try to avoid a situation like what Gideon went through).
We are very thankful for Gideon's recovery and we know that the restoration of Gideon's health is not for our sake, but so Gideon will be a light shining for the truth and power of God! Our hope and our faith is in God, and not in the outcome of any situation we face in life. He is always good, always just, and always keeps his promises! What joy fills our hearts to see our boy come home as a young man with a faith that has been made stronger through a difficult situation. We have been on the receiving end of so many of God's amazing miracles. We are so blessed!

Thank you for all the meals and other donations you have given. Most of all, thank you for your prayers for Gideon and our family. Please continue to pray in faith for a full recovery for Gideon and for complete healing to all five of our children struggling with health problems.

We are praising God for the continued improvements in Gideon's condition! He is able to eat on his own, talk, read, and write! He is also showing amazing patience as he slowly regains his abilities. One of the first things he said to me after he started talking again on Wednesday this week was that he wants to memorize Psalm 27, which includes: "Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD." - Ps. 27:14. What an encouragement that after all he has been through he has a desire to hope in the Lord through his recovery! I have been encouraged by his faith in God during his entire stay at the hospital. God has given him a very steadfast, patient, and hopeful spirit during this whole situation. What a great God we serve! We continue to remember that in our waiting, we don't wait for our desires to be fulfilled - We are waiting for the Lord, and our hope is sure in Him! What a glorious assurance we have.
Please pray that his improvements would continue and that his muscle control would be completely restored.
Gideon has continued to show slight improvements each day with his motor skills. He will be transferred to Vidant Rehabilitation Center in Greenville, NC later this week (probably Thursday). It is unsure how long he will spend in the rehab center, but the Doctors are hopeful that he will be there for about six weeks. Please pray for Gideon to be content during his time of rehab. He would really like to come home, but we all know that he needs to spend time in rehab in order to get better. Also, pray for our family. The rehab center is 105 miles from our house, so it will be much more difficult for us to spend time with Gideon on a regular basis.
