Stroke Recovery for Stephen Perry

My name is Amy and I am Stephen Perry's wife. The day after we arrived for a week long vacation to visit family in Arizona, my husband Stephen suffered a massive stroke in his brain stem area at the young age of 35. The brain stem is the part of the brain that regulates activity in the body that we do automatically such as regulating breathing and swallowing, among other things. He has been hospitalized for over two weeks at this point with not much improvement during that time, although he is in stable condition. He is unable to breathe on his own and must be connected to a ventilator to maintain his breathing. At one point he lost all movement on his right side, but his condition is improving as we have noticed slight movements on that side, though not quite deliberate at this point.

He has been moved from the hospital where he was in ICU to another ICU at an acute long term care facility. It is expected that it will be 2-3 months before doctors will even be able to perform an assessment to determine how much damage the stroke has caused and the level of recovery he will be able to have.

I am collecting funds to pay for the medical expenses that are accruing thoughout his long stay here away from home. Because he is unable to sign for consent for any procedures that may be required, I will need to stay in Arizona as long as possible to assist with everything the medical care staff requests, so any donations will also be used to help cover the costs of bills while I am here taking care of Steve.

Steve is very involved in  the Rocket League community and is loved and cared for by many people throughout his life and within the Rocket League community. We are doing our best to ensure he has a quick recovery, but there is quite a bit of work he has to do to be able to be strong enough to head back home.

If you are able to donate, Steve and I would be very appreciative as we are in a rough spot right now and in need of help from other people more than anything else that has happened to us. We could both use all the emotional and financial support people are willing to give during this difficult time.

Thank you,
Amy

Update: Steve moved his right thumb this week! He is slowly but surely getting movement back in all his limbs. He has been in a lot of pain due to muscle spasms in his right leg, but we hope this will be resolved with a visit to the doctor at the end of the month. He has been doing great with therapy, and continues to improve as time moves forward. We are very excited with this new development! Way to go Steve!

Steve has had his first swallow! He just needs to strengthen those muscles and then he can start eating real food again! And it will help with getting the trach removed and he can come home!!!! Thank you all for your support and well wishes. He is improving day be day.

The latest update on Steve is he is now moving his right leg! Very small movements, but it is progress for sure. He is still breathing on his own and is very cooperative with the nurses and staff at his new facility. He even wanted to watch Rocket League today! He is getting better day by day but progress is slow. But any progress is good! Thank you all for your support and well wishes during his recovery. The support from the Rocket League community has been amazing.

Hi all! Apologies for not updating this in a while. It gets tough to go on here and write things that I'm excited about that aren't necessarily major milestones.

Stephen is doing well. He gets better and better every day. I guess the biggest thing to report is that Steve now has feeling in his right arm! He hasn't responded to touch previously, but now it seems that he can feel the touch sensation when his arm is touched. I am hoping this is one step closer to him being able to move it! He does physical therapy 5 times a week and is able to stand with assistance from a machine for about 10 minutes now. They are still evaluating his swallow, so not much progress to report there, but he works with speech therapy 5 times a week as well. Overall, he just looks better and more happy/relaxed than previously. I'm sure he is just bored out of his mind and getting stir crazy, but he is making progress nonetheless.

I wish I had more updates to give, but this is a super slow process. But any improvement is a good thing and he is getting there!
