Help get Papa back on the road

On the morning of the 4th of October at 3am, I was awoken by my distressed Papa telling me his car had just been stolen from outside our house. He was woke to the roaring sound of the diesel engine of his 4 wheel drive Toyota starting. He jumped out of bed, ran outside, only to see an empty space where the car had been parked and the sound of the engine as it turned the corner. I called 000 my Papa did not sleep again that night.

At 8am in morning I was informed that the car had been dumped at a petrol station in Bundorra. It was seen by those who reported it to have smoke coming out the bonnet. I had no idea how badly damaged the car was, I imagined that it had been in some sort of collision. I returned home later that day to find the car back on the street outside our house. My speechless, distressed papa standing beside it in shock and disbelief. The car was beaten and battered inside out. I learnt that the car had been used in a robbery. Two bandits rammed the 4 wheel drive into the Pines Shopping Centre in Doncaster, navigated through the corridors till they got to the ATM. They repeatedly rammed the ATM but the machine wound not budge. They gave up on this and took a sledge hammer, smashed a jewelry shop window, stole some items and drove out again.  Papa’s beloved 4 wheel drive is now parked in the front yard. The damage is astronomical both inside and out.

The look in my fathers eyes was heart breaking. For someone is has so little, he now had even less.

He hugged me so hard that night, I could feel him breaking deep down inside. We can say it's just a car and at the end of the day what matters is that we are all healthy and alive. But this car was his home - his everything.

Around 8 years ago papa made a bold decision to pack up his life and go on a nomadic journey around Australia. He felt that it was time for him to spend last part of his life doing what he loves most, art. He sold and gave away nearly everything, reduced his possessions to what he could fit into a trailer and the 4 wheel drive and of he went. He stopped at inspirational places for periods of time and painted. He lives a simple and frugal life on a pension.  He is an award winning, phenomenal painter, sculptor and artisan. His 4 wheel dive had taken him thousand of kilometers and he would say "she has been good to me".

He had returned to Melbourne for a few months to spend time with me. He was planing to leave again in a few months. He was to return to the dessert landscape that he loves so much in central Australia.

My Papa needs to get back on the road, to live his dream to finish the rest of his adventure, to return to the simplicity, peace and tranquilly that he deserves.

Sadly he has no vehicle insurance. The estimate of what it would cost to repair the car, outweighs the value of the car. Even worse than the car, is how broken hearted Papa is. It would be hard for many to imagine what this means because many of us simply call the insurance company and they fix everything. Considering he lives on very little, the wonderful thing about him is that he had managed to create a rich and rewarding life that he loved and lived.

Next week he turns 70, it would be wonderful to present him with a very special birthday gift. I cant do it alone. I am asking for help. I will do all that I can to make this possible.

I want to show papa just how empathetic, wondrous and kind people can be.  That in this world there are people who really care and help when needed. I hope to remind him that the human story is a shared one, that in times of great hardship, like this, he is not alone.

All funds raised will go towards buying him a vehicle.

I thank you for your generosity!

X Claudia

PS. Papa in general is computer, emails or social media illiterate. He has no idea we are doing this. It will truly be a blessed surprise for him!

Due to security cameras in the shopping centre you can watch the terrible event that broke my papa’s heart. Please go to this link: http://www.msn.com/en-au/sport/watch/masked-robbers-go-on-a-rampage/vp-AAf7dp6
