Olivia is a six year old child with a beautiful heart and a steadfast spirit. She gives amazing hugs and brings deep joy to those who come to know her. She works super hard at the things she wants to achieve. Actually, in her first year of Kindergarten, she won an award for perseverance! She loves Paw Patrol, puzzles, lego and dolls. She loves making silly faces and trying on funny hats; her resulting laughter is infectious. She is a selfie queen! I have had the joy of spending many hours with Olivia, she is my little monkey and I love her dearly.
Sweet Olivia has a pretty tough brain diagnosis, it’s called Semilobar Holoprosencephaly. She also has bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss.
Olivia faces severe obstacles in all aspects of her life. For one, she faces the very heartbreaking reality that she will never walk unassisted. Also, her neurologist predicted a significantly reduced life expectancy. The same doctor shared that she will never be able to function with any kind of independence. She requires constant and significant support in all aspects of her life.
A very real example of this need for support is her family’s transportation situation. Olivia has two siblings, her brother Nathaniel (who has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder) and their little sister Lucy. Olivia is growing and lifting her into the van is not only becoming more difficult, but it’s also becoming dangerous. Soon it will be impossible to lift her in at all. There is also a struggle with spacing in their van. Her wheel chair comes apart and takes up all the space the trunk has to offer, so it’s becoming impossible to travel for any distance, to take day trips or even grocery shop.
Her parents have said that they feel heart broken to admit they need it, but have come to realize that a van that has been modified is the only solution to these issues. They would love to be able to continue with the van they have, it feels hopeful to them. But unfortunately the prognosis isn’t positive and the vehicle change is inevitable. The cost of a modified van is significant and even with the hope of assistance of some charitable organizations, the remaining balance is insurmountable.
Olivia’s parents give so much to their children. They are an incredible team and have devoted their lives to raising their children to reach their fullest potential. They are selfless, loving and kind. I’ve chosen to open this campaign to appeal for some financial help for this beautiful family. They would never do it for themselves. They are known for being helpers and givers so asking for help is hard for them.
